child abuser A TEN-year sentence has been handed to a formerMaidstoneman for sexually abusing two children. Charles Stevens (pictured) was sentenced atMaid- stoneCrownCourt on Friday,May 18, after he was con- victed of child sex offences. The 72-year-old was arrested on


March 17 last year after a woman approached Kent Police. A second woman came forwardlater that year with allegations against Stevens and hewas chargedwith non-recent sex offences against two children, com- mitted between 1975 and 1986. Stevens, now of Padstow, Corn-


wall, denied the charges, but was found guilty by the jury after an eight-day trial. He will serve 10 years in jail with


an extended licence of 10 years. In addition, hewas put on the Sex Of- fenders’ Register for life. Investigating officer DC Samuel

MORE than 100 jobs are being ad- vertised at the new mental health hospital off Bearsted Road in Maidstone. Cygnet Health Care says it will


need full and part-time staff at its 65-bed facility on theKentMedical Campus, set to open in September. Vacancies include everything


from cooks to cleaning staff; care workers to clinicians; and adminis- trative andmanagement roles. Work began on the “lowsecure”


hospital in June 2017. It will pro- vide inpatient treatment for up to 65 people with mental health is- sues,with 16 beds formale patients held under the Mental Health Act and 17 for women with borderline personality disorders or who self- harm. The siting of the hospital has


been blamed for the decision not to build two schools on the campus, previously considered a “suitable location” by the Education, Skills and FundingAgency. MPHelenWhatelywas pushing
