East Malling and Larkfield Parish Council

Protecting Open Spaces The Government rules for preparing Local Plans include the idea they should also show “im- portant green spaces” that are close to where people live and have recreational or other value such as being important in the landscape. Areas of tranquillity can also be shown and these all then have a status in planning similar to the Green Belt. The parish council has therefore submitted an up-to-date list of all the land it owns in the parish as the evidence base and has asked a number of areas be considered including the Larkfield Playing Fields with its pitches, skate park, ball park, children’s play area, and its views of the Downs. Nearby it is suggesting Larkfield Churchyard, closed to burials, be a tranquil quiet area part of the Conservation Area. In East Malling the playing fields with its fine trees once part of Clare Park is suggested based also on its recreational value. This includes the football pitches and public

tennis court. The council points out it is the centre of the village and the estates. The open space owned by the borough separating Clare Park housing estate from New Road is also put forward. The borough council is also asked to consider the woodland strips either side of the A20 separating the road from the Step Stile and Winterfield estates on one side and Larkfield Heath estate on the other side of the road. M20 works Work has started on High- ways Englands plan to make an addition- al lane each way on the M20 where it runs through Larkfield, Ditton and Ayles- ford by using the hard shoulders. This is part of the national “smart motorways” scheme promoted by the Government. The initial work largely completed is to cut back or remove trees and bushes near to the current hard shoulders. Chapman Green The parish coun- cil has asked the borough council to consider registering this green on the

Macey’s Meadow Volunteer working par- ties will continue on Saturdays through- out the summer months as follows: May 19, June 2, 16 and 30, July 14 and 28, August 11 and 25. They run between 10am and noon and tools will be pro- vided. All meet at the container by the railway line near the mixed woodland. The annual Blossom Picnic was held at Macey’s Meadow on Saturday April 21. The warm weather in the preceding week came just in time to bring out the cherry blossom and the sunshine and blue skies on the day encouraged many families to come out and enjoy a picnic in the Meadow. There was folk music from Nick and Lucy, arts and crafts for the children and a cake stall, which included some interesting Japanese del- icacies. Guided wildlife walks took in a talk and demonstration on bee-keeping and the opportunity to spot reptiles un- der the specially laid mats dotted around

AGM There was a disappointingly small turnout at the AGM on March 21, so it was agreed to give it more publicity next year. Bob MacDonald was voted in as chair, with Barry Evans vice- chair, Richard Selkirk treasurer and Ellie Milsom to serve as secretary. Lynn Hunt, Elaine Hall and Margaret Hall were elected to the committee. Surgery There was much discussion about the West Malling surgery at the AGM and it was suggested that the windows fronting onto the high street would make a good noticeboard to show the latest news, and the practice thought it was a great idea and have used it immediately. The parish council suggested that the practice add the days that the GPs work be added to the practice website, and the practice have also added the days of the week that all clinical staff work too. Diabetes Week Anybody who has recently visited any of the three surgeries will know that Diabetes Week has just taken place. The inten-

The next major event in the Meadow will be the popular Applefest, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday September 22. There may also be an- other bird/bat watch during the summer and this will be advertised when a date is fixed.

Clean-up Britain A Clean-up Britain event took place on March 10. A group of Parish Councillors and residents, suitably equipped for litter picking, spent two hours walking some well used public paths throughout West Malling. In this short time seven pickers collected seven large bags of rubbish. Following their hard work all enjoyed home-made warming soup kindly provided by a Parish Councillor. It had been a success-

ful event and hopefully one that will be repeated later in the year. Tennis lessons The Wimbledon season is ahead and many youngsters are in- spired by tennis at this time. Child tennis coaching takes place at the Norman Road tennis courts where fun filled hour- ly sessions are led by Jim and his team. Young beginners to players wanting to improve their skills are welcome. If parents are interested in their children having lessons please contact Jim Barton on 07803 368450, jimbtennis@yahoo. com or on line at jimmystennis.com for further information. Allotments There is still time to acquire an allotment to grow summer produce. Plots are available at the Ryarsh Lane Al- lotments. If you are resident within West Malling Parish you can secure a plot with a refundable deposit of £50. Yearly rent is £15. Please contact the Parish Clerk on 01732 870872 for further information.

One You The One You website www. oneyoukent.org.uk gives advice on all aspects of health and fitness as well as an opportunity to book a session with a One You adviser for help in setting achievable health goals. Communication The practice had several ideas to improve communication. One idea is that we have open meetings, where patients can come in, sit down and talk to a member of the man- agement team as well as the PPG. We are all here to listen. For more information visit www. westmallinggp.nhs.uk and also please register your email address with us via wmgpppg@ gmail.com. New members We are currently looking for a couple of new PPG Committee members. If you would like to join the committee then please contact Bob MacDonald by emailing wmgpppg@gmail.com or click on the PPG Registration Form link at the top of the practice website www.westmallinggp.nhs.uk.

Step Stile estate which Tonbridge and Malling Council owns as a village green. This would give it long-term protection. The matter is being considered by the Borough solicitor. Church Farm Hall Work is to be carried out to renew the inside lighting at the Church Farm Hall in New Hythe Lane. This will include replacing the noisy box type lights that were installed when the hall was first converted from a farm barn. Holy Trinity Flower Festival Larkfield Church is holding a Flower festival on June 2 and 3, from 10am-5pm. The theme will be “We will remember them...World War 1”. All welcome.
