May 2018 5 Claire Byers, Publisher T
his month, we focus on natural and personalized medicine. Te state of our healthcare system is abhorrent, and not only because it is costly, but
because it continues to address the symptoms of disease instead of the underlying causes. Decades of just putting a Band-Aid on illness hasn’t helped any of us get healthier. Tere is a need for both traditional and alternative medicine. We must overcome our fears and open our minds to a new paradigm. Change is not easy and can be uncomfortable, but it must happen for a better, healthier future. We must start to take control of our own personal
health, and this has been a big challenge for me. I started a conscious effort to make my own health a priority because we have so many great practitioners around us (massage, reiki, energy healing, essential oils, yoga, meditation and the list goes on) that are passionate and experienced and can help keep us on a path to better health. Yet as much as I learn and I try, I still seem to put my own needs last. We also spotlight a new book that just came out on April 1, Mother Matters, A
Holistic Guide to Being a Happy, Healthy Mom. A great giſt idea for the new mother, it provides resources and research-based solutions to help her thrive and find greater health and happiness in her new role. In honor of Mother’s Day, we also have a list of events throughout the month of May for families to spend time together and create some special memories. We can’t forget the value of our beloved pets, and this month we talk about cats. In
our Natural Pet department, see how a cat can transform a home to alleviate loneliness, reduce stress and tension, significantly reduce allergies in young kids and babies, and even improve empathy and sharing in autistic kids. Animals never cease to amaze me, and having them in our lives makes us happier and healthier people, that’s for sure. Hopefully, we are at the beginning of warmer weather and you can spend some
time outside this month re-energizing and soaking up some vitamin D. Take this month to start being an advocate for yourself and your health—it is vital and investing in a natural approach now can yield greater overall wellness in the future.
In health and happiness,
