OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO PHARMACY SHEELIN MCKEAGNEY FPSNI

supported by

Sheelin McKeagney, Outstanding Contribution to Pharmacy recipient

the recipient of this year’s outstanding contribution accolade started working in the family business during school holidays and, 25 years later, he is still there.

Sheelin Mckeagney, who is one of the province’s most high-profile pharmacy contractors, graduated from liverpool School of Pharmacy, before returning to northern Ireland for his pre-registration year. Within a short space of time, he had acquired his first pharmacy and, by 1995, had taken over the reins of the family business following his father’s untimely death.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the family business not only survived, but thrived, under Sheelin’s direction. Yet, in addition to the provision of standard pharmacy services, Sheelin chose to focus on outreach, involving his pharmacies heavily in community- based healthcare projects, and engaging in Building community Pharmacy Partnership projects with local groups.

Sheelin’s involvement in pharmacy does not end there, however! over the past quarter of a century, he has dedicated his career to being involved in the development of pharmacy as a profession. In addition to having had a seat at one time or another on every pharmacy-related committee in northern Ireland, he has also made a significant contribution to the promotion and progression of pharmacy within the health sector.

as a fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of northern Ireland, there is no doubt that Sheelin is a

leader for the whole pharmacy profession. over the years, Sheelin has had a seat on the Executive committees of both the Ulster chemists’ association and community Pharmacy northern Ireland; the latter of which he went to become chairman.

he represented pharmacy on his local commissioning group (lcg), and he was the first pharmacist to be appointed an lcg chair. during his eight-year tenure, Sheelin’s lcg commissioned services for a population of 360,000 people. as ever, his focus was on local community engagement in the development of services. throughout his tenure, Sheelin’s leadership was consistently strong and dynamic. he led the lcg through some difficult and challenging discussions with sensitivity and professionalism, ensuring that both group members and the public were fully engaged and included at all times.

Indeed, on his last day in office, Sheelin stressed his pride in the changes that had been implemented in local service provision during his time as lcg chair. ‘We have seen significant changes in our local services in recent years,’ he said at the time, ‘and the Southern lcg has invested significantly in many of these such as the community nursing at home and acute care at home services, securing additional Ed consultations and enhancing local maternity services. I am particularly proud however, that the Southern lcg has regularly engaged directly with our patients, service users and the public, seeking their experiences of using local

services and also their suggestions on how these services could be commissioned and improved in the future.’

‘as our local population grows and ages, it has been necessary to ensure that the decisions we made are fit for the needs of our population now but also into the future.’

fast forward to 2018, and Sheelin is currently active on the Uk Pharmacy rebalancing Board representing community pharmacy. he is a member of the Strategic leadership group for Pharmacy at the department of health and he also sits on the national appeals Panel, the Professional Practice committee of the health & Social care Board. as has been the case since the beginning of his career, local community is at the forefront of the father of four’s pharmacy career. he is a board member of the community development and health network, chair of craigavon heart town committee, a governor of his local primary school and amazingly still has time to keep fit and healthy, organising park runs in his local area. he is also currently providing strong leadership for the whole pharmacy profession as the chair of the Pharmacy forum for northern Ireland. throughout his career, Sheelin Mckeagney has enjoyed – and continues to enjoy - the respect and admiration of both his profession and his peers, and this unassuming armagh man is totally deserving of this highly prestigious accolade.
