40th Anniversary of Twinning in Beccles
ON Thursday 10th May, Beccles will welcome 65 visitors of all ages from her Twin Town of Petit-Couronne in France, to cel- ebrate the 40th anniversary of Twinning between the two towns in 1978. Joining in with the celebrations will be a further all age group of 12 from the Town of Ahlem in Germany, which twinned with Petit-Cou- ronne in 1967. The group will include mem-
bers of the Commediamuses Theatre group in Petit-Cour- rone, who will be joining actors from Beccles in a performance of Hark to the Bells in St Michael’s Church on Saturday 12th May. The performance will be open to all and free to attend, with a retiring collection to the Friends of St Michael’s. Please do come along to watch this
unique production, which will take place between 4.30pm and 5.30pm. Also joining the group will be
15 members of the Petit-Cou- ronne Junior Rugby club, and their three trainers, who (sup- ported by an award4all lottery fund grant) will be staying in the 5th Beccles Scout hut and join- ing the Beccles Rugby Club junior members for a day of sport at Beef Meadow on the Saturday. Do come along and watch them in action. All the events over the week-
end are being organised by Bec- cles Twinning Association, who are very keen to encourage more young people and families to take part in twinning activities. Please contact
twinning.bec-

News From Harleston’s Future
HARLESTON’S Future is lead- ing a campaign to have a Harles- ton Hare, decorated with swifts and wild animals, in the town centre over the summer. It will form part of GoGoHares, a Nor- folk wide scheme to raise money for the local charity, Break and will help put Harleston on the map. There will be a smart phone app and a sticker book encourag- ing people to visit all 18 hares located around the county, as well as the 50 in Norwich. At the time of going to press almost £2,500 had been raised towards the total of £5,000. The money raised by the auction of all the painted hares in October will enable Break to continue its valuable work with children at risk or with disabilities by pro- viding children’s homes, foster- ing service and other support. An Afternoon with Jazz~Unlimited
FOLLOWING the successful visit of his Benny Goodman style trio ‘Palomar’ in 2016, local musician Ray Simmons brings a new group ‘Jazz Unlimited’ to Beccles Public Hall on May 20th for a fund- raising concert of classic jazz greats. Co-led by local guitar hero
Phil Brooke, Jazz Unlimited offers a relaxed sophisticated and soloistic sound evoking American small group jazz of the ‘50s and 60s with material extending from the earliest years of the Jazz Age, through Swing, Bebop and Cool and
into the ‘70s and beyond. Ray feels ‘Jazz Unlimited’ can be proud of a repertoire almost limitless in scope with compo- sitions by WC Handy, Gersh- win, Ellington and many others comfortably rubbing shoulders with the likes of ‘modernists’ Dave Brubeck, Bill Evans and Miles Davis in a heady cocktail which is guaranteed to set your toes tapping. Completing the group are the ever-youthful vir- tuoso bassist Owen Morgan and star drummer, Craig Hipperson. ‘….their style of jazz was so
infectious that it had the small but privileged and very appre-
ciative audience tapping feet all evening…...if you weren’t there, you missed a real treat and a very happy evening. (Marshland Mardler Review June 2017) There is more information at
www.jazzunlimited.co.uk Jazz-Unlimited will be play-
ing on Sunday 20th May at 3pm (doors open 2.30pm) at Beccles Public Hall. Tickets are avail- able from the box office, open Monday to Saturday, 10am - 3pm, from
www.becclespubli-
chall.co.uk or by ringing 01502 770060 for fee-less card sales.
Waveney Light Opera production ‘My Fair Lady’
TICKETS are now on sale for Waveney Light Opera Group’s production of My Fair Lady. Frequently called ‘the perfect musical’ because of its superb plotline, based on George Ber- nard Shaw’s Pygmalion, and enchanting book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe; the original 1956 Broadway and London production starred Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews and set a record for the longest run of any show on Broadway up to that time. It went on to secure world- wide fame with the classic film adaptation which also starred Rex Harrison with Audrey Hep- burn in the role of Eliza. ‘My Fair Lady’ tells the story
of impoverished Cockney flow- er-girl, Eliza Doolittle who has ambitions to better herself by learning to speak more elegant- ly. She is taken on, for a bet, by arrogant phonetics teacher, Henry Higgins who attempts to pass Eliza off as an upper-class lady at Ascot and the Embassy ball. Of course, nothing goes as

planned and Higgins soon learns that his project causes more complications than he ever imagined. Waveney Light Opera Group
have spent the last five months rehearsing for this production. The singing and dancing num- bers are fantastic; including famous songs like, ‘Wouldn’t It Be Loverly’, ‘I’m Getting Mar- ried in the Morning’ and ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’ - performed with incredible
energy by a talented and enthusi- astic cast. Together with a beau- tiful set and lavish costumes, this promises to be a truly magi- cal night out. Buy your tickets now before they sell out! My Fair Lady is on at Beccles
Public Hall from Tuesday 24th April – Saturday 28th April. Tickets available in person
from the Box Office Mon-Sat 10am-3pm, by phone on 01502 770060 or online at
