100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum
FOLLOWING an extended winter break the museum opened its doors again on March 10th and we were pleased with the turnout on the first weekend. Many new displays and
exhibits have been added during the winter months and we already have a number of gather- ings of vintage motorcycles, cars and military vehicles booked in to visit throughout the summer. Two dates for your dia- ries are the weekend of June 9th/10th when we welcome a gathering of pre-war Morris Minors, and also August 18th when we are to be visited by a group of motor cyclists from the Midlands, to remember a par- ticular raid in which the 100th Bomb Group took part, when only 12 of their 21aircraft sur- vived. The museum as a whole has
become a pilgrimage for many who return year upon year to remember the sacrifices made by our allies, as well as being a gathering place for many diverse groups of people to look around the museum and take in the atmosphere of this once very busy airfield, they also have the opportunity to picnic in the well maintained grounds and chat to
our volunteers about the airfield. The increase of groups using the museum as a gathering place and museum of remembrance has also grown year on year, so much so that we already have two groups booked in for 2019. Although the building of the
airfield started in 1942, the first Americans arrived at Station 139 Thorpe Abbotts (as it became known) on June 9th 1943, with some aircrew arriv- ing with their aircraft, whilst others arrived by train at Diss Station, and they were conveyed to the airfield by road in military vehicles At that time the airfield was barely finished, the 100th Bomb Group were one of the later groups to arrive on British soil, but the vast numbers of American personnel in such a small area vastly outnumbered the local populations, initial problems with locals quickly disappeared and locals and the US personnel became good friends. The personnel from the base became a familiar site around Diss and Harleston, and although being wartime, what little leave they did get was made good use of with trips to London, Norwich, Cambridge and other places as time allowed.

Between missions they would visit local public houses, such as The Cherry Tree and Swan in Harleston, the Crown in Dickle- burgh, the Red Lion in Needham and the Billingford Horseshoes to name a few. The four day Easter weekend

arrived with varied weather, but reasonable numbers visited throughout the weekend. Among them was Drew Miller, who was nephew of Bombardier Lt Law- rence Ward, who escaped death after the plane in which he was flying was broken in two by another 351st aircraft which had been hit by flak. Remarkably, three men on each aircraft sur- vived and became POWs. Drew was accompanied by his neph- ew, James Delsordo Easter Monday brought heavy rain in the morning, meaning the num- bers of vintage motor cycles that turned out was significantly
reduced, but the ones that did show up were keenly admired by the visitors to the museum. The museum is now open
throughout the summer on weekends and bank holidays until the end of October, (inclu- sive) and additionally, Wednes- days between May and Septem- ber, (inclusive). So why not come along and learn more about the brave young men and women from the States who 75 years ago came to our shores, with many not making it home? If you have a few hours to
spare each month, maybe you might consider becoming a vol- unteer at the Museum, come along and talk to our volunteers and find out more.

LISA North Photography in Harleston is holding a fund- raising event throughout April to mark National Pet Month which runs from April 1st to May 7th 2018. National Pet Month seeks to
promote responsible pet owner- ship, and raise valuable funds for animal charities across the UK. Lisa & her husband Malcolm
were devastated by the loss of their beloved Labrador, Cindy, in January. They want to hold the event, called Cindy’s Charity Collection, in her memory and raise money for the Cinnamon Trust. This wonderful charity is supported by Cindy’s local vet- erinary practice, Oakwood Vets in Harleston, who treated Cindy in her last few months. The Cinnamon Trust is the
only specialist national charity which seeks to relieve the anxi- eties, problems, and sometimes injustices, faced by elderly and
