The Ingate Freehouse
THE Ingate Freehouse is cel- ebrating it’s first year, and what a year it has been! Winning a massive accola-
tion from BT Sports recog- nising the pub’s support for Women in Sport and Man- ager of the Month, as well as an award from CAMRA (campaign for real ale). Bec- cles has a wonderful variety of pubs and eateries to offer. We are delighted to have received great support from other local pubs who are all supporting one another. What’s it been like behind
the scenes? The landlady Michelle explains: We (my husband Trevor and I) always set out to guide
the pub to a more community outlook. We are building an attractive pub, knowing we are here for the duration, and focussing on the rebuilding of not just the pub, but the property too, back to its out- look in 1902. This is our home, so we want people to feel welcome in it. However, that being said, that comes with the responsibility of ensuring that people behave in the correct manner amongst others, and there have been a few troubles along the way, as is expected with entertainment and alco- hol. The work ethic and home balance is a juggle! The landlord Trevor and
the manager Corey are both expected to keep on top of the maintenance and the ales/cellar. Corey is bar manager and I always need input and back-up from him. The staff team are amaz-
ing, the balance is great here but sometimes that comes with the squabbles of the late shifts as bar-work is totally unsociable hours. Custom- ers can be demanding and our busiest times can be such hard work as it’s constant service without let-up, as people want a drink and to enjoy themselves. The face of the pub chang-
es too! If you come in mid- morning, the atmosphere is
completely different in the evening. We have a massive com-
puter based program that allows us to create Disco Bingo, Karaoke and Quiz nights. Piano evenings also put a nice smile on every- one’s face and reminds them of the old London pubs. Disco Bingo is hugely popu- lar on a Thursday evening after fish and chips. We have theme nights and discos with Karaoke, there is a free raffle on Sundays with equal amounts of great prizes and Booby prizes, and Jokers wild on Sunday nights has just seen a winner walk away from a night out with £2,000. It is a huge surprise to a lot
of people that we also have a hairdresser who comes in every first Sunday of the month to assist with those who don’t have time for a haircut. A nice coffee or pint and your hair done! We sim- ply want to to be the best community pub we can be! Our aim now is a monthly
market on a Thursday morn- ing for those with Eggs, Cakes, Milk, Veg produce and Book swaps. We just have to find the right stands and outside area. Everyone is involved, even our chick- ens have a role in producing the scotch eggs! We welcome David Brown
who is now responsible for our in-house pastries and savouries to aid his cam- paign for Help for Heroes. The Landlord is also rais-
ing funds for prostate cancer through darts, with a whop- ping £160 already every time someone scores 180, they put in the pot. It’s a huge machine here, and we all keep it turning!
