River Waveney Trust
THE River Waveney Trust (RWT) is a charity formed from the River Waveney Association founded in March 2012. We are part of the national Rivers Trust movement. We have five local groups in Diss, Harleston, Bungay, Beccles and Lowes- toft/Oulton Broad, as well as a very active sub group in Scole. Members are welcome to join their local group who deliver projects, run working parties and social events. The aims of the Trust and its
members is to care for the river, its ecology, water quality and environment guided by our local Broadland Catchment Plan. We place a big emphasis on working with our local com- munities. The Trust has long term partnerships with the statu- tory bodies which have a responsibility for the

NOW in its seventeenth year, Beccles Cycle for Life charity ride organised by the Rotary Club of Beccles will be on Sun- day 13th May and it is already attracting entries. The ride is to raise funds for
East Anglian Air Ambulance and the Rotary Club’s charitable trust in equal shares. It is suit- able for all ages and abilities with five possible distances of 8, 16, 25, 41 and 50 miles and it attracts families and regular cyclists alike. Family entries and teams are at a special rate and the shorter distances are especially suitable for younger riders and their family members. This year, for the first time,
riders of all categories can enter directly online through the event’s revamped secure web- site
becclescycleforlife.org and those who prefer postal entry can download forms from that site. Having had to change all the
routes slightly because of the new Beccles Southern Bypass,
bers is “Light and Shade” and the entries will be judged by the visiting demonstrator. Each month we hold a raffle
for the floral arrangements and refreshments are served half way through the evening.

the organisers have also made bigger changes to the shortest route, which is on a different cir- cuit, though all routes start the same way as last year’s, heading south from the Sir John Leman High School. Maps of all the routes are on the website. There are prizes to be won by

THE speaker at the March meet- ing of the Beccles U3A was Dr Joy Hawkins, Lecturer in Humanities at the UEA. The subject was the diagnosis and treatment of disease in the Mid- dle Ages. Dr Hawkins is cur- rently researching medieval and 19th century ailments, acci- dents, injuries and all bodily fluids. She explained the four-tem-
perament theory - that there are four fundamental personality types: sanguine, choleric, mel- ancholic, and phlegmatic. The medical professions in the Mid- dle Ages believed certain human moods, emotions and behav- iours were caused by an excess or lack of body fluids which explained the causes and reme- dies to correct imbalances of the four ‘humours’: blood (san- guine), yellow bile (choleric),

becclesu3a.org.uk, which also contains full information about the Beccles U3A’s many interest groups, events and activities. Monthly meetings are held in
the Beccles Public Hall, Small- gate. Doors open at 9.45am and the meeting commences at 10.30am. Admission is free for members, who must still present their current membership card. Prospective new members’ admission is £2.50. The May meeting will be held
on Wednesday 16th when Dr Richard Hoggett will be giving a talk on Cold War Archaeology.
