Hall poised to be bigger and beer

ALONG-held ambition to extend the village hall at Leybourne looks set to become a reality by the end of the year. The parish council, which owns

the building in Little Market Row, has been hoping to increase the size of the hall since before chair- man Bob Ulph joined 18 years ago. He said: “After setting money

aside for nearly 20 years I am ex- cited thatwe are nowclose to turn- ing this dream into a reality by creating a much-needed extension to this important community facil- ity.We are now very close to start- ingwork.” The council hopes to put the

scheme out to tender this summer and to start the work in the au- tumn. A budget of £168,000 has been set aside to add the newbrick and tile block on the grassed area at the back of the building. It will incorporate a stage, new bar area, and another meeting room, which will have a separate access.

Parish council clerk Maria Mc-

Farlane says the extension will in- crease the 150 person capacity of the hall, make formore flexible use of the hall and allowmore than one function to be held at a time. The current building, which

houses the parish council office, will be operational throughout the building project, as the two sections will be kept separate up to the point when they are “knitted together”. MrsMcFarlane said: “Thewhole

idea of the hall is not for profit but to serve asmuch as the community as possible. We have seen more users booking space for newactiv- ities such asmartial arts and dance classes in recent months, which is great news andwewill be promot- ing its availability further in due course.” The hall has a licensed bar and is

the venue for the popular commu- nity parties held atHalloween and Christmas, funded by the parish council.

SHOPPERS and staff at Sainsbury’s in Larkfield have raised more than £3,600 for Heart of Kent Hospice. Customers voted to adopt the

charity six months ago and fundraisers have pulled in £3,688. A Christmas jumper day, door col-

lections and a coin donation drive all helped towards the total.

Store worker Val Danvers-Wright,

whose mother spent her final days at the hospice, said: “As soon as we went to see mum, we knew we had done the right thing. “The staff were so kind and un-

derstanding, they couldn’t have donemore for her. She was treated with respect and dignity.”
