n Gardens to Visit Festival flush of spring at Pashley

Pashley Manor at Ticehurst welcomes the season with its Tulip Festival. Dawn Kingsford has been finding out more …

Pashley Manor provides a fantastic treat for garden-lovers, as the county awakens to spring, with its Tulip Festival from April to early May. The grounds of the romantic English manor – on the border of

Kent and Sussex – offer a unique, co-ordinated colour carpet of more than 40,000 blooms, jostling in the sunshine among trees, sculptures, fountains and ponds. Pashley’s garden team of five full-time and seven part-time

gardeners has planted 112 new varieties of the spring sensation for this year’s 24th display. White lily flowers and cream classic tulips set against an old brick

terrace is just one of the displays to seek out during your visit, along with a riot of red and orange blooms commanding the herbaceous borders, topped by tendrils of bronze fennel. Romantic soft pink peony hues have, again, been cleverly cloistered between red brick walls and pleached pear trees to create another of the visual attractions in store. You may even be lucky enough to catch the manor’s Bluebell Walk, while you’re there. Gifts of the garden over the rest of the year include more than

100 varieties of roses and thousands of dahlias. The timber framed manor house at Ticehurst is owned by Mr and

Mrs James Sellick. Dating back to 1550, the couple first opened their garden to the public in 1992 and remain heavily involved in the planning, planting and its maintenance.

Gardener’s diary

Pashley’s head gardener Keith Boylett is as excited as any visitor to see the spring display – planted with new bulbs each year. He said: “I can’t wait to see the hot coloured tulips in the herbaceous borders and the adjacent groupings of Tulipa Banja Luka (golden yellow with feathered red markings), Tulipa Helmar (golden yellow with a deep red stripe) and Tulipa Gavota (darker red with a golden yellow edge). I want to see how these three striking varieties look next to one another.”
