helping them to come to terms with their diagnosis and to live in comfort, with dignity and respect until the end of their lives.

It can be incredibly difficult for those left behind when a loved one passes away, as we all cope with grief and bereavement differently.

40th wedding anniversary in 2016. ‘Dennis’ diagnosis came completely out of the blue’ Marilyn remembers. ‘We had no idea where to go to for help or advice at first, and then we were referred to the Hospice. On reflection, I’m not sure now, how we would have coped without the team there.‘

can’t do this,’ so Marilyn joined the Hospice’s Stepping Stones Bereavement Group. Facilitated by the Hospice’s Family Support team, Stepping Stones helps people to grieve and come to terms s

so understanding. Knowing that I wasn’t alone in how I was feeling really helped me to cope.’

Since then, Marilyn and her family have celebrated Dennis’ life through taking part in remembrance activities, like the Hospice’s Sunflower Appeal where each summer, the families and friends of loved ones are invited to make a dedication

‘Last year I went to the Sunflower Appeal with Dennis’ sister, to see where Dennis spent his last days.’

Now Marilyn is volunteering at the Hospice for five hours a week. She says ‘I love to be helpful and to give something back to the Hospice, which has supported me and my family so much.’
