Generators are key to the installation of subsea power cables
Power Electrics supplied two 1250kVA generators to power subsea cable installation equipment for a global submarine communications company. The generators provided power for the motor reels that are used to lay the cable and were set to work in ‘Runner – Standby’ configuration, meaning that power would not be lost in the event of a fault with one of the generators. Bespoke service packs were also provided to enable regular on board maintenance, reports the company.

ower Electrics currently maintains a fleet of over 40 megawatts of genera- tors, ranging from 550kVA to 2100kVA, designed to be rapidly
deployed around the UK from a nationwide depot network. The company maintains a highly-skilled
special projects team on hand to assist with the synchronisation and installation electric generator sets. Generators are available complete with external fuel tanks, connection cables and transformers, enabling clients to reach the correct voltage. Power Electrics also provides a wide range
of High Voltage (HV) transformers suitable to bespoke requirements of projects ranging from 2MW to 100MW.

in size up to 4000kVA and are able to operate at either 50Hz or 60Hz to match the system requirements. In August 2017 Power Electrics supplied
two 1250kVA generators to power a key sub- sea cable installation equipment for a global submarine communications company. Submarine cables like these are laid down by using specially modified ships - sometimes even purpose-built ships - which carry the submarine cable onboard and slowly lay it out on the seabed as per the charts/plans given by the cable operator. The ships can carry with them up to 2,000
kilometers length of cable. Depending on the equipment onboard the cable-ship, the type of plough used, the sea conditions and the

ocean-bed where the cable is being laid-down, cable ships can do anywhere from 100-150km of cable laying per day. Newer ships and ploughs now do about 200 km of cable laying per day. The generators supplied by Power Electrics

to the company to enable regular onboard maintenance. The generators were loaded on to an offshore vessel using dock cranes.
