UK Power Reserve hits 500MW of operational capacity
UK Power Reserve has hit the milestone of 500MW of flexible power plants in operation, bringing new sites online at the rate of more than one a month throughout 2017. The achievement underlines UK Power Reserve’s track record in meeting existing project commitments as the company prepares to expand its portfolio beyond a gigawatt in the next Capacity Market auction. The UK’s leading flexibility provider now has 31 sites in operation across England and Wales, providing lowcarbon, rapid response electricity.

provider now has 31 sites in operation across England and Wales. UK Power Reserve’s growing portfolio of
assets – currently at 813MW – plays a crucial role in the development of renewable power generation, providing vital back up power when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow, and helping to smooth the peaks and troughs in demand. The company will continue to add to its
fleet of flexible capacity this year, starting construction on its 120MW portfolio of battery storage assets – one of the biggest in Europe. It will also start work on the 160MW gas-fired capacity won in 2015’s Capacity Market.
UK Power Reserve fully expects its total
portfolio to surpass a gigawatt at the auction in February, thanks to its strong track record in translating prequalification results into Capacity Market contracts. UK Power Reserve is the largest such
developer of new-build distribution projects secured in all auctions to date, and currently accounts for a tenth of all new capacity due to come online. Tim Emrich, CEO and co-founder, told
UKPN: “I am delighted to have reached this important milestone as we continue to build efficient, flexible power plants up and down the country. “We are one of the few companies bringing significant new capacity online as we meet the UK’s growing requirement for nimble, low carbon power generation while providing affordable security of supply to the end
