Women engineers are vastly under‐ represented in the power industry. But this could be changed, says Judith Packer.

gas turbines - for 20 years and in my opinion not much has changed. In my Sabbatical year I hope to be a visible really 'role model' to help to inspire both present and future engineers. "You should ask yourself: what if every person born has the potential to be an engineer? What do we do as a society to put girls off? Without realising it, our society puts gender-bias into everything we do at school, as home, in the ways careers and opportunities are presented to us. This results in conditioning people into roles. "With the WOMEN IN POWER Conference we want to bring women together collaboratively to share our stories, so people can share with us. We will help companies frustrated by a lack of a diverse workforce - and this starts by trying to understand each other's perspectives. I suggest three career maxims which women could adopt: TAKE THE STEP - FLOURISH - ENGAGEMENT.

be treated as equal human beings and seen for their skills, talents and potential. 'Discover Unknown Horizons' is a personal goal of mine - and I feel this could be adopted everyone. We will ask each of our women speakers about this very issue." Judith explains: "Our primary goal is to give people starting out in their professional


lives - there are a lot of us about - to take that first step and join our professional network. We want to say to them - "Share The Journey" - you're not on your own. The fact is, I want to make life easier for women who are coming up through the various levels of industry behind me. I want to tell them they can 'network together and be empowered' so 'let's get connected'. Engineers exist to solve the problems of the world - and I firmly believe that we can certainly improve the world through engineering.” She concludes: "The great thing about the Conference is that the CPD has granted

Relevant, continuous professional development is crucial to all of us and it's important that we all recognise that and make every effort to interact, discover and understand. Engineering can be an exciting and highly-paid career for those who want to apply themselves. It’s diverse, creative and offers the opportunity to do something life or even world-changing.” Naomi Climer, [below] President of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET), has publicly said that the ongoing shortfall of women not only threatens the UK’s ability to keep up with the rest of the world, but also affects the quality of the country’s inventions and solutions. We need more women, not just because we won’t have enough engineers if we don’t, and not just to make the workforce more balanced but because I genuinely think the technology will be better if women are involved. The shocking reality is that the UK is missing out on half its potential engineering and technology workforce by failing to attract women,” Ms Climer said. “It’s vital that we get more women. Over the past 30 years she has been a Project Manager, and an Engineering Director for the Power, Energy, Oil & Gas, Manufacturing Consturction and Development sectors. She is a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (MIMechE) and is a Member of the Institution of Diesel and Gas Turbine


TERESA BOUGHEY - M.A. FCIPD is the Founder & CEO of Jungle HR Ltd. She is well- known for her ongoing role as a commercially- focussed, strategic, energetic Senior HR Professional. Her particular areas of expertise are Women in Leadership, Strategic HR development and Leadership Alignment. She lso lectures on key Change Management, Organisational Design and performance improvement (including M&A). Teresa has extensive & proven expertise in providing support to Executive Boards and their organisations, focusing at all times on providing pragmatic advice to her clients which enables lasting change. Teresa is known for her passion concerning the Diversity and Inclusion agenda and, in particular, Women in Leadership. Teresa is on the All Party Parliamentary Group for Women in Enterprise. Her management experience includes the role of Project Director for Strategic Business Transformation project across Europe, resulting in cost savings of €1.5 million.


POONAM SAKARSUDHA - TOPIC: Professional Development. Ms. Sakarsudha (L & G) will explain how Task Orientation provided a pivotal foundation for professional progress. She also outlines other key aspects of complementary professional development.
