CLAIRE IN THE COUNTY ALL YOU NEED IS THREE LITTLE WORDS … Claire Thayers gives her advice for what is meant to be the most romantic day of the year

After the joy of Christmas, the struggle of ‘dry’ January, February is still the toughest month of them all for us singletons. As soon as the cream eggs start to be stacked onto our shelves (usually on Boxing Day) the tat starts to arrive… as you walk through the supermarket there are Valentine’s presents and cards every where you look. Tacky teddies, cheap champagne, ropey roses, tiny thongs… and every year I ask myself WHY?

I have been in relationships when I have been given such items and I had to put that happy face on and pretend to be thrilled through gritted teeth, when in truth, all I really wanted was a hug.

A simple heartfelt card, sent in the post is lovely – someone taking you out for a meal you haven’t had to cook is thoughtful – or even better, having your loved one cook your favourite supper, just for the two of you… great! Taking the time to lay the table, light a candle, cook a meal without leaving the kitchen in chaos. Actions always speak louder – even a simple piece of toast brought up in the morning, cut into the shape of a heart, covered in strawberry jam shows they care.

Personally, I prefer to give and I love to spread a little bit of happiness, nothing beats the excitement of a card on the mat especially as it always offsets the

depression of a brown envelope from the tax man. Every year I love to send a handful of anonymous cards to a few of my friends (male AND female). If you are reading this – remember me, I love the hope that they bring, I love trying to decipher the writing and trying to work out where it was posted from.

I hope the tradition continues as it would be impossible to send loving wishes on the 14th via text or email when you are trying to keep your identity secret. One year I was so depressed; postie arrived, and nothing… my chap hadn’t sent me a card and then stupidly I looked on Facebook and he had wished everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day APART FROM ME… he didn’t last long after that! Oh the Joy of social media.

So here is my top tip to all you guys and gals who are reading this. If you think a mad last minute dash to Anne Summers is going to impress your other half and secure a ‘romantic’ night of passion… think again… all we need is to be cherished and loved, so forget the tat this year, just take the time to say the three words we all want to hear.

I Love You…

This is the best Valentine’s gift ever; who needs anything more and just remember to say it EVERY day and not just once a year!
