New book explores the idea of a ‘good death’

Palliative care medicine pioneer Dr Kathryn Mannix has penned a number of stories that reveal what it means to experience a good death, based on her decades of experience supporting people at the end of life. A former consultant at the Marie Curie Hospice, Newcastle, Dr Mannix has brought these stories together into a new book called With the End in Mind. “The people that I’ve written about experience their final days in all sorts of places, including hospices and at home,” said Dr Mannix. “These stories represent what access to specialist care – like the care provided by Marie Curie – enables.

“I want to let people know that a good experience of the process of dying can happen anywhere with the right support. “For the families and

loved ones of the person who is dying, having someone who is really familiar with the process leading

the family through can be so valuable. Something as simple as telling them it’s OK and emphasising that you can be safe while you’re dying can really help during such a difficult time.”

With the End in Mind is now available to buy in bookshops and online.

Improved care for people living with heart failure

An innovative partnership has improved the care people living with advanced heart failure received at the end of their lives. The Caring Together programme, which began in 2011, brought together the British Heart Foundation, Marie Curie and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to develop new integrated models of care in the Glasgow and Clyde area, where around 11,300 people are living with heart failure. “People with advanced heart failure

have similar palliative care needs to people with cancer,” said Dr Nicky Agelopoulos, Marie Curie’s Research and Innovation Director. “However, they often don’t have access to palliative care services when they need them.” Under Caring Together, the patient’s healthcare team, including their GP, cardiologist and heart failure nurse, worked together closely. A medical anticipatory care plan was shared, so that everyone was aware of the

found that it improved symptoms and quality of life for people with advanced heart failure, provided individual patient planning and reduced hospital admissions and healthcare costs. While the programme has now

concluded, the service is being continued by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

ethic of Marie Curie Nurses could inspire supporters to train for an event,” said Designer Ben Eldridge. “We put this idea into action by overlaying an image of someone training with a motivational quote from a Marie Curie Nurse.” Jeremy Irving, Studio Manager, said:

“I’m immensely proud of the team’s contribution to Marie Curie so it’s really nice to get this recognition from our creative industry peers.”
