MaryBywaterswas one of the foundingmembers of theDallasCivic Ballet, later to become theDallasBallet and TheDanceCouncil of North Texas.Her loss is felt nationally both inNewYorkwhere she chose to live her life and inDallaswhere she has deep roots in the dance and art community.


KimAbel 1952-2017


KimAbel, 64, died Thursday, September 14, 2017, at her home in Dallas, Texas after a battlewith pan- creatic cancer.Kimwas born November 8, 1952 inGainesville, Florida,where she had an idyllic childhoodwith her family. She stud- ied ballet and other performing arts at JoniMessler Studio ofDance until leaving at the young age of 16 to make herway inNewYorkCity as a dancer.


Kimwas an accomplished professional ballet dancer, having been a principal dancer forEglevskyBallet under the direction ofEdward Villella. Following that, she became a nationally respected teacher and balletmistress. She based her principles and teaching onMaggieBlack, her teacher andmentor for 20 years.During her career,Kimwas a bal- letmistress for the Pennsylvania andMilwaukeeBallet,NorthCarolina Dance Theater,BalletOklahoma,EdwardVillella andDancers, and the EglevskyBallet. She taught company class forAmericanBallet Theatre, AlvinAileyAmericanDance Theater,ComplexionsContemporary Ballet, andCedar LakeContemporaryBallet, aswell as technique class- es for SouthernMethodistUniversity, TexasChristianUniversity, and BarnardCollege. She especially enjoyedworkingwith the students at

The dance community lost amost influential dancer and kind soul on July 23, 2017.DarrellClevelandmade hismark inDallas as an artist, per- former and teacher,workingwith many local schools and studios. In the 90sDarrell performed as a principal withDallasBlackDance Theatre and later, teaching for the company.He earned hisMAinDance at Texas Women’sUniversity andwent on to teach at otherUniversities and stu- dios, includingContemporaryBalletDallas.Darrellwas dearly loved by his students, his colleagues and friends and thosewho knewhim knowwhat a tragedy it is to have lost someone so special, so prema- turely.
