Mettingham Village Hall Association S O S
ON Wednesday 14th February at 7.30pm the AGM is being held at the Village Hall. We desperately need some
new blood on the team with fresh ideas. At the moment there are six of us trying to keep the boat afloat and sad to say, age isn’t on our side with two in their
sixties, two seventies and two in their eighties. Though the minds are willing the bodies are not! Committee meetings are once a month for a couple of hours when, like other organisations, we try to plan for the year ahead. Please do come along. We really are quite nice people!

Travel by Gavin
I STARTED Travel by Gavin in August 2017 and I wanted to tell you about my journey, experi- ences and what brought on my real passion for travel. Travel has always been a real
passion of mine even from the first time I stepped foot on a Go airlines flight out of Stansted air- port on a cold January morning travelling to Spain. My first job after leaving col-
lege was working at Stansted airport in a retail unit and work- ing shifts allowed me to arrange day trips to Europe for myself and team, and during this time I visited numerous places includ- ing Amsterdam, Belgium, Bar- celona, Prague, Strasbourg, Ven- ice, Naples, Valencia and more. I was given my first break in
the travel industry working as a European Travel Consultant in London; I wrote a letter to their

1.15” on 11th. Wind Direction- mainly from:-
West 12 days South-West 7 days and North-West 7 days. December 2017 was slightly
colder and considerably wetter than long-term average.
Although this month was cold-
er than normal and the coldest December since 2010. Mean tem- perature for this December was just 0.2C below long-term average. Earlier, the second and third
weeks were the coldest, five days in the period recorded daytime Maximum of 4C or less as modi- fied Arctic air “plunged” towards us on North-Westerly winds at times. Snow, sleet and hail show- ers were noted at various times during the four days 10th to 13th inclusive, the equal most for the month since 2012. Snow cover was only noted on one morning (12th), until slightly less cold air was enough to clear it later in day. Once again milder air was
established over the southern part of the British Isles for most of the last ten days. Again there was no chance of a white Christmas which have been few on my recording history, only two actual snowfalls on the day in 1970 and 2010. The 5.12” rainfall total finished
off what had for a large part been a dry year to record an annual total of 25.54” which is near enough average compared with long- term. This was only the fourth month of 2017 to record above average rainfall. It was easily the wettest December on entire record (commencing 1968). High Pressure influenced much
of the first and third weeks, which by no coincidence were the drier parts of the month. The earlier period recorded 2.38”, including the wettest day of the month (and year) with 1.15” on 11th. The lat- ter period accumulated 2.31” and featured two days of 0.75” noted on 26th and 29th. In total, there were eight of the twenty rain days which recorded one fifth of an inch or more. Wind direction throughout the
month again had a huge Westerly type bias, meant that barring a handful of days we were looking to the Atlantic Ocean for our weather conditions during the next day or two.

HR team telling them what I had achieved and from my interview my passion for travel shone through. This role allowed me to travel
extensively across Asia, the Mid- dle East, Indian Ocean, USA and Caribbean and a random trip to Kiev. Kiev included a visit to Cher-
nobyl and the exclusion zone, which was fascinating, eye open- ing and creepy all rolled into one. After years of various roles
within the industry including working as a product manager responsible for contracting of hotels, I took a leap of faith and took six months out of the indus- try to live in Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand teaching English to adults. This was an amazing experience and really helped me experience a different culture and way of life. I came back from this and had a few years break working as a cus- tomer service trainer for a well
known insurance company. The reason I started Travel by
Gavin is that I feel the travel industry has been stripped of its heart and soul, along with the experience and passion. This is what I aim to put back into the industry. My customers are never just a
booking reference - they are real people who want to make the most of their holidays, share experiences and make their dream trip a reality. I usually drive my partner to distraction discussing everything travel, I am never about a hard sell, just providing excellent service. As I am part of Independent Travel Experts I have access to over 300 suppliers, so the chances are I’ll be able to match you to your per- fect holiday. Telephone: 01603 319503 /
