Cinderella’s success is a boost for local theatre

ANOTHER successful pantomine run at the Hazlitt Theatre has ce- mented the county town's desire for an "intimate, traditional" show, says its boss. MartinCleverley admits the ticket

sales were down slightly on last year but plans are already under- way to stageAladdin later this year. It is thought that a rival panto on

inMaidstonemay have contributed to a dip in audience figures. MrCleverley, generalmanager of

the Hazlitt Theatre, said: "This year we welcomed 18,231 audience members to see and enjoy Cin- derella. "This equates to a 77%capacity for

our pantomime run throughoutDe- cember, which meant a dip on pre- vious years' figures. However, we are proud to have received superb feedback for a quality performance and encouraged by local audiences who still want to enjoy an intimate, traditional panto in their local the- atre at Christmas. “We are looking forward to de-

lighting audiencewithAladdin this year." The panto starred TVchef and na-

tional treasure Rustie Lee and for- mer Eastender Stefan Booth. The castwere joined backstage by a host of glittering stars during it month- long run, including TV astrologer and authorRussellGrant and singer Pixie Lott. Aspokesman for the theatre said:

“Itwould be a lie to say that having another panto in the town didn’t af-

fect us because it did, slightly. “I guesswe just had to just had to

up our game and do the absolute bestwe could. “There is no doubt whatever that

it was a hugely well-received show and that people loved it.” The Hazlitt is dependent on the

annual pantomime to subsidise the running of the venue.
