Divers needed for £3mworks
SPECIALIST divers were called in to Ham HillWastewater Treat- ment Works to begin work on a £3mupgrade. The diving team, from Burgess
Marine, were on site in Snodland for a week to complete the first stage of a project to bring the site into line with tightening environ- mental standards. The company, which provides
marine engineering services, has worked on somemajor projects, in- cluding upgrading Lord Sugar’s super yachtMy LadyA.While the work in Snodland may have seemed slightly more mundane, it required the same level of expert- ise. Divers from the Dover-based
firm were at work for five days to replace a valve at the bottom of a storage tank containing partially- treatedwastewater -with zero vis- ibility – to prevent services being interrupted for customers. SouthernWater ProjectManager JonathonQuirk said theweek-long
operation involved detailed plan- ning. He said: “Although we’ve used divers before at other South- ern Water sites, it’s not a com- monly-used practice. “We couldn’t access the valve by
draining the tank or diverting the flow, as that would have affected the running of the site, so the only option was to get someone in and work on it live. “It was a huge operation and re-
quired a great deal of thought and planning. With such poor visibility in the tank, the divers had to rely on touch, experience and detailed information fromSouthernWater. “I’mpleased to say they success-
fully completed the task. This means the site was able to remain fully-functioning throughout the vital first stage of work, meaning wastewater services were unaf- fected to our 56,000 customers.” With this stage of thework com-
plete, Southern Water says it will start to upgrade the site in Febru- ary.
104more homes in Village
WORK starts this month on another 104 homes near Snodland, on the emerging Peters Village development. The project will provide a mix of private and up to 40% social
housing on the overall 1,000-homes’ development over more than 200 acres. The building sitewas bought for £10mfromthe local landowners
Trenport. Amajor constructorwill build the one and twobedroomflats and
two, three and four-bedroomhomes for the developer. Aspokesman said: “Workwill start on the site in January. Between
30 and 40% of the 104 homes will be for social housing, with the re- mainder for private sale fromthe develpoer.” Richard Hall,MD of Trenport, said: “ Having worked with them
(the developers) before, I am very confident that the quality of the new homes they will deliver will only add to the growing reputa- tion of Peters Village as a wonderful place to live as the new com- munity in the Medway valley continues to go from strength to strength.” Although detailed permission has been received for the develop-
ment andworkwill start in January. No artist’s impressions of what the development will look like were available.
