Industry Forecast

The Trend of the Japanese Investment Casting Industry

by Hiroshi Yokota, International Group Japan Foundry Society, Inc.

For Investment Casting as a whole, sales and production volume have exhibited decline since 2014.

F This is largely

driven by a change in demand for Industrial Gas Turbine components, as is depicted in Figure 2, which addresses sales by market. Figure 3 reflects the trends broken down by market by volume (weight).

Automotive Industry The market for automobile castings, having the largest volume of those considered here, depicts strong sales growth, while at the same time volume by weight reflects a decline. This is due to the rising demand for lighter weight. While the quantity of parts are increas- ing, their weight is decreasing to offer greater energy savings.

Industrial Gas Turbines Gas Turbine sales have shown drastic decline since 2014. Components pro- duced to serve this sector are of high added value, so a decline in production volume (weight) has a very strong im- pact on sales reduction. Figure 4 shows monthly sales for 2016 by application. Although the recovery of Gas Turbine was anticipated at the end of 2015, the sector continues to struggle.

Sales by Sector The pie charts in Figures 5 and 6 depict 2016 usage. Figure 5 shows sales by sector and Figure 6 shows production volume by weight. Automotive appli- cations account for 49% of Japanese Investment Casting sales and 71% of the country’s volume.

In comparison,

production of high value added com- ponents (Aerospace and Gas Turbine) is relatively low.
