HAPPY NEW YEAR! New beginnings and starting fresh, isn’t that
what the new year is all about? This month’s issue is about wellness and there
are as many modes on how to achieve that, as there are advisors out there who can suggest a multiple of ways to do it. There is one common thread in much of that advice and the process typically has to do with finding out who you are and being the best that you can be. How do we get there you might ask? Well my friends, the good news is that it’s pretty much entirely up to you to figure that out. The bad news? Not taking the time to do it. One of my favorite sayings to use on myself and
my friends is, “The only thing that is guaranteed in life, is that it changes.” Nothing stays exactly the same and if it does, you better check your pulse, because something is definitely out-of-whack. Even if you think you’re standing still, my guess is that you just aren’t in touch with what’s going on around you… So wake the heck up, would ya! One of the great pleasures of this job is that I get
to have conversations with people who show us the scope of their lives, sort of an overview of what they’ve done and how they have gotten to where they are. It’s fascinating to discuss all the ins and outs of a person’s journey and see how different and how similar we all really are. Basically, we all want a roof over our head, people to share our live’s with and hopefully enough cash to go out and have a bit of fun now and then. I was reminded of this again in an interview
with the talented auteur Luka Kain, who portrays Ulysses in the film Saturday Church. He’s a 14-year-old actor, who’s been working since he was a baby in one form or another and discusses his life as if he’s an old soul housed in a young man’s body. The film and his character are powerful and he takes on the subject of a gender-

non-conforming teenager who ends up homeless and on the mean streets of New York City. As with many LGBTQ youth, he must face rejection and loss at a very tender age and overcome those challenges under the duress of learning to accept and love himself. Sound familiar? I think most of us can attest to
that experience in one form or another and with varying degrees of pain, suffering and success. We all must leave our homes, find our tribes and walk the path so many who have blazed before us. That isn’t to say that everyone on the path is completely successful, because all you have to do is look at the LGBTQ teen homelessness statistic: The group represents up to 40 percent of all young people experiencing homelessness. Considering that LGBTQ youth represent an estimated seven percent of the total youth population, the numbers are disproportionately high. I guess the moral of the story is that we all need
a little love and support sometimes. There is no shame in asking for and giving out a little extra now and then. So next time you see that homeless kid on the street, have a chat with him, he has a story too and you might just learn a little more about yourself along the way.
