stage Based on Roundabout Theatre Company’s Tony Award-winning production,

Cabaret takes place inside the famed Kit Kat Klub, where the Emcee, a raucous ensemble of characters and the sultry Sally Bowles, take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd into leaving their troubles outside. But, as life in pre-WWII Germany grows more and more uncertain, will the decadent allure of Berlin’s nightlife be enough to get them through their dangerous times? The gender-bending role of the Emcee is being taken on by actor, Jeff Skowron, a man with an impressive resume: including co-starring inBad Santa 2 with Billy Bob Thornton, as Greg Mondonski inGreg and Donny, a single camera, scripted comedy about two friends in a small town in Western PA., as well as leading roles in Broadway productions ofEnron, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, High Society andHow the Grinch Stole Christmas. Skowron also created the role of Chris Bell opposite Hugh Jackman inThe Boy from Oz. Since moving to Los Angeles, Jeff won the L.A. Stage Alliance’s Ovation

Award for Best Leading Actor in Parade, and was nominated as Best Leading Actor for his portrayals inThe Producers and Les Misrerables. His La Mirada productions include, Pride and Prejudice, Lend Me a Tenor, The Little Mermaid andMan of La Mancha.

SKOWRON SAT DOWN WITH THE RAGE MONTHLY FOR A CHAT ABOUT LANDING CABARET AND HIS LIFE AS AN ACTOR. When asked how he got his start in acting, Skowron responded with, “I was

twelve and they were doingMame at my high school and needed a kid to play Patrick. Through the encouragement of my music teacher I auditioned and got it. That summer, she had me audition for a nearby professional theatre in Pennsylvania called the Mountain Playhouse and I got my first professional contract and they had me back every summer through my graduation.” Of his many productions at La Mirada Theatre, when asked what his favorite

was and why, he was diplomatic in his answer, “I’ve truly enjoyed every production I’ve been in, La Mirada is such a wonderful place to work and they produce terrific theatre. My favorite however, would be Les Miserables in which I played Thenardier. I was new to L.A. (from N.Y.C.) and they welcomed me into their family, it was beautiful. Les Miserables has such a huge fan following and every show was like a rock concert. I could have done it for a year, that show was so fun.” The iconic role of the Emcee was so immortalized on film by Joel Grey. Because of that expectation, we wondered how he would put his own stamp on the character. “I’m very excited about this one because we have a truly exceptional cast, artistic staff and design team, many with whom I’ve worked before. They have been very gracious, allowing me to be a part of the discussion from the start. My hope is for this Emcee to be something people haven’t seen before…I think it will be gorgeous.” When asked why he thoughtCabaret continues to stand the test of time, he astutely concluded, “It’s smart, sexy, touching, dangerous and I think it’s very cool that La Mirada/McCoy Rigby has decided to mount this show. It has one of the greatest scores ever put on a theatrical stage and well-written, very human characters. And, after re-reading the script this year, it’s evident that this script is also timely. The rise of Nazi Germany was a concept that always seemed so distant, for someone of my generation. But this past year, we’ve seen firsthand that authoritarianism and ethnic scapegoating are always just outside the door—this piece almost feels contemporary now.” As to what’s up for Skowron in the future, he had this to say, “I’m also a writer,

that’s what brought me to L.A. My writing partner and I sold a television show called,Greg and Donny, to IFC. We now have a new show, a dark comedy called Max Riddle, that has a lot of great people attached, so I’m excited to see where this one goes.”
