12/ DECEMBER 2017 THE RIDER Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week 2018 Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week 2018

(#GBFW18), in its 52nd year, will run from Wednesday, January 3rd to Tuesday, Janu- ary 9th, starting with Beef Day, and ending

with Crops Day. It is a 7-day Agricultural Conference packed with a most impressive and informative line-up of speakers! It is held at the Elmwood Community Centre in

Elmwood (# 38 Queen St. West). Elmwood is located approximately 8 kilometers north of Hanover on County Road #10. The co-ordina- tors for this event, Grey County Ag Services, in conjunction with agricultural commodity lead- ers from Grey and Bruce Counties, have at- tempted to feature at least one high-profile speaker for each day, targeting the issues and challenges facing the farming community today. The Committee is delighted to announce

that this year, all days of #GBFW18 will be Live Streamed. So, if horse enthusiasts live further afield, they can still participate in this amazing conference! Of course, the best way to experi- ence GBFW is in person, so that attendees can chat with the speakers during breaks, visit the tradeshow booths, and network with fellow pro- ducers over a delicious lunch. If that is just not possible, this new online viewing option will allow people from far and wide to learn from our spectacular speakers. Please go to Evenbrite.ca to pre-register for this online view- ing option. $10/day or $50/week. One of the most exciting days each year is

Horse Day – Sunday January 7, 2017. It runs from 9:30 am – 4:15 pm. Where else, in one venue, can you experience presentations from:

the Director of Equine Guelph; a Professional Huntsman; a Clini- cian/Riding Coach/Horse Trainer and Certified Professional Coach; and a third generation Clydesdale person; plus visit a packed tradeshow? This year the program will include:

• Catherine Billings from Saugeen Conservation will be our first speaker. She will share details about Saugeen Bluffs Horse Camp- ground. • Gayle Ecker, Hon. B.A., B.Ed., M.Sc., Director, Equine Guelph, University of Guelph, will deliver two presentations. Her first topic will be The Horse Health Check: An Important Tool for the Horse Owner. Attendees will learn how to do the Horse Health Check and understand the results as to whether the horse is normal, or if there is a problem. With an interactive format, horse enthusiasts will learn this important skill in assessing the health of their horse. Gayle’s second presentation will be An Interactive Journey Through the Gut of the Horse. Using a life-size replica of the horse’s gut, attendees will follow the food down the digestive tract of the horse, peek into the window of the gut and learn some inter- esting things along the way! • Marion Young, Owner of Doura Clydesdales, will deliver some great information about Draft Horses Today. She will dig into the Clydesdale’s place in 2018 versus previous generations. • Anne Gage, Owner, Confident Horsemanship, joins us to delve into How To Resolve Common Behaviour Issues in Horses. Com- mon behaviour problems in horses can range from mildly annoying to outright dangerous. Some include: fidgeting while being saddled; not standing still for mounting; refusing to pick up his feet for the farrier; challenging to lead or lunge; or showing signs of resistance when being ridden. Your horse’s behaviour is his communication. This presentation will help you to gain insights into the causes of your horse’s behaviour and how you can help him become your content and willing partner. • The last speaker of the day will be Colin Brown, Professional Huntsman, Eglinton and Caledon Hunt. Colin will explore Hunting With Hounds; An Alternative to Walkers. • The Youth Horse Program will not be offered in 2018. However, new this year, after the afternoon break, Downstairs Demos will be offered in the lower level of the Elmwood Community Centre. Lawrence Cannon will share an interactive program about Prepar- ing For the Long Ride. He will provide an introduction to the Decker Pack Saddle and show how the horse wears it. He will in- troduce participants to the basic load equipment, panniers, lash ropes and how to tie the diamond hitch, (with audience participa- tion). He will also demonstrate how to basket hitch a regular saddle. Registration is $20 at the door. No pre-registration is required.
