BE A FRIEND – TO A HEDGEHOG
Amidst our festivities in ‘the bleak mid winter’ spare a thought, please, for our tiny prickly friend, the hedgehog, an endangered species.
It is of course, nocturnal, feeding mainly on beetles, caterpillars, earthworms and slugs – in other words a very garden-friendly creature.
Hedgehogs do hibernate, when they reduce their heart rate from 200 beats per minute to just 20 as they enter a deep torpor. Nevertheless, as with all creatures, not all follow a strict pattern. Some may still be about (as our visitor is at the time of writing in early December).
If you are inclined to put food and water out for them, this could include not only specialised food available in pet shops and garden centres but dog or cat food too (just not ones containing fi sh as that can cause them problems).

If you are a resident in Upton or Lytchett Minster and would like an allotment, we have a few vacancies for ½ plot from time to time. Our fees are very reasonable and we have regular coffee mornings/events to improve facilities on the site.
The committee would like to wish all the allotment holders a very Happy New Year. Our AGM is on Friday 2nd February at the Community Centre Upton Cross, at 6pm. This is also when we collect the yearly rents and renew old friendships.
