Growing For The Future Advice for gardeners from Chestnut Nursery

There might be a chill in the air but we’re all glowing warm with anticipation for the year ahead.

And boy what a year we have planned. The propagator is switched on and early season crops sown. Again, this year we will trial new and exciting varieties as well as the tried and tested. This will be the case across all of our ranges, from evergreen shrubs, herbaceous perennials, summer bedding and exotics; we just love growing something a bit different.

This year will be particularly signifi cant for us, as our new shop build will commence. It’s going to be a valuable asset for the area and will open up fantastic new opportunities for all who come to the nursery, including customers and especially our volunteers, for whom the charity exists. The nursery is steeped in history, having been fi rst set out in 1887. By the early 1930s the site had assumed its current layout and went on to house a large exotic plant collection.

After laying derelict for some years and falling into disrepair, the charity took over the site in 2001, naming the nursery after the large chestnut trees growing on site. Through hard work and dedication by all who have worked and volunteered over the years, the nursery has become the valued place it is today. With such a rich history, it is with great pride that we step into a new year, growing for the future.

If you wish to fi nd out more about the nursery and keep up to date on upcoming events, please pay us a visit or check us out online at www. chestnutnursery.org.uk from there you can like us on Facebook or sign up to our regular newsletter.
