DELIVERING SILENT MOORING SOLUTION IN DUBLIN BAY

TfI Marine recently deployed its elastomeric tethers on two Mobilis DB8000 buoys in Dublin Bay, offering a robust mooring solution without noise emissions

During the dredging work to deepen the channel into the Dublin Port, a comprehensive environmental monitoring programme including the live monitoring of mammal activity has been implemented. This includes monitoring with acoustic sensors to identify the presence of mammals and restricting the dredging activities at such times to limit impact.

PROJECT DETAIL Techworks Marine, who were awarded the monitoring contract, chose Mobilis DB8000 buoys and sought a silent mooring solution (no clanking chain or shackles.) The two tonne DB8000 have a 3m diameter hull constructed from multiple-section polyethylene floats that are bolted around a central steel structure, have through-hull access for underwater instrumentation and cabling.

Deployed by the Granuaile from the Commissioners of Irish Lights, the buoys were positioned strategically

within the Bay to give real-time detailed sea-state data on turbidity, wave and current profiles. The buoys also house a Jasco acoustic detection system for primarily whale and dolphin activity.

DESIGN

TfI Marine designed a taut mooring solution incorporating their tethers to produce a silent system. It had to have an acceptable level of strength and elongation for the buoy motion and maintain survivability in unfavourable conditions. The company’s patented elastomeric mooring system extends the mooring line length with wave and sea elevation changes, keeping the buoy in position and responsive, while protecting against storm damage.

TETHERS

The tethers have the ability to elongate from 4.5m to 12m under high loads. The dynamic system significantly reduces peak loading and simultaneously offers silent

mooring, thus enabling easier acoustic monitoring.

The tethers are fully scalable up to multi-MN loads offering renewable energy developers’ solutions tailored for their specific wave, floating tidal and floating wind structure and the associated environmental conditions. They offer developers the opportunity to operate in conditions and locations previously unachievable, enabling increased power production along with substantial capital and operational cost reductions.
