FOCUS ON IRELAND

FEATURE SPONSOR

ESB WESTWAVE

The WestWave project aims to develop the first wave energy project in Ireland by generating 5MW of clean renewable electricity from the plentiful wave energy resource off the west coast of Ireland

WestWave is a collaborative project being led by ESB in conjunction with a number of partners such as SEAI and the Marine Institute.

The project will demonstrate Ireland’s ability to construct, deploy and operate wave energy converters successfully. It will pave the way for commercial projects through demonstrating technology, developing the supply- chain, gaining public acceptance and sharing learnings for others to invest in follow on projects in Ireland.

SUMMARY TO DATE Westwave is now in the consenting phase of the project. Following consenting, the advancement of Wave Energy Converter selection for the project will be carried out. To secure the required consents for both the offshore and onshore elements of the project,

ESB are working with local stakeholders and the relevant national bodies.

SITE DEVELOPMENT ESB are focusing development activities on the Killard site in Co. Clare. The area of interest extends from both near shore and offshore possibilities. ESB International is now completing detailed environmental assessments at the Killard site. These include geophysical assessments, seabed surveys, onshore profiling, cultural and heritage, visual impacts, marine traffic as well as all studies required as part of the site consenting objectives.

IRISH GOVERNMENT SUPPORT The Offshore Renewable Energy Development Plan (OREDP) identifies the opportunity for the sustainable development of Ireland’s abundant offshore renewable energy resources.

It sets out key principles, policy actions and enablers for delivery of Ireland’s significant potential in this area. The commitment of the Irish Government to Ocean Energy outlined in the OREDP is very welcome and essential to support early stage projects such as ESB Westwave.

NEXT STEPS

ESB will continue to progress the consenting of the Killard site and will also continue to work with local and national stakeholders to ensure this highly innovative project is delivered and demonstrates the viability of wave energy in Ireland.
