Irish SME SeaPower successfully completed the first phase of the performance and survivability trial of its ¼ scale device at SmartBay in March 2017
This project was supported by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland’s (SEAI) Ocean Energy Prototype Development fund and the next phase of tests will involve the testing of a power takeoff (PTO) designed by Limerick Wave.
FUNDING OCEAN RENEWABLE ENERGY THROUGH STRATEGIC EUROPEAN ACTION (FORESEA) FORESEA is an €11m project which helps to bring offshore renewable energy technologies to market by providing free access, for test and validation trials, to a network of ocean energy test centres in North West Europe.
A number of companies have expressed interest in the SmartBay Marine and Renewable Energy Test Site through FORESEA’s 2nd and 3rd calls and an announcement will be made in relation to awarded support packages pending a decision on the test site lease. The 4th

FORESEA call for applications is now open and will run until the 29th June 2018.
CABLED OBSERVATORY Sonardyne has been provided with funding under the JERICO-Next project to access the SmartBay Cabled Observatory. Sonardyne will deploy their doppler velocity instrument in Galway over the coming months, with the objective of testing a long-term deployment of the device. This deployment will help evaluate performance in a variety of environmental conditions and compare the data gathered against other instruments already deployed on the observatory.
SEAI with support from the Marine Institute, plan to upgrade the SmartBay Cabled Observatory to include an acoustic array. This unique system will help assess and measure underwater sound and Particle
Velocity (PV) disturbance, around wave energy converters. This will provide valuable underwater data for use in environmental acoustic assessments.
STATUS OF THE TEST SITE LEASE APPLICATION The recent application for a lease for the SmartBay Marine and Renewable Energy Test Site in Galway Bay, to increase the range of new novel marine technologies that can be tested at the site is still under consideration by the licencing authority. If the lease is granted, the test site would underpin the growth of the marine renewable energy and sensor technology sectors in Ireland.
