NATIONAL OCEAN TEST FACILITY

In association with the MaREI Centre, Lir NOTF provides unparalleled support for technology developers in assisting them to advance their devices to higher Technology Readiness Levels

The testing facilities are also integral to national and international funding applications and contribute significantly to the sustainability of MRE research. In January 2017, an investment of €10.5 million in EU funding was secured for the second phase of the programme, MaRINET2. Stemming also from the success of the MaRINET programmes is MARINERG-i which will develop an integrated European infrastructure to facilitate future growth and development in the offshore renewable energy sector.

The test centre comprises four test tanks, extensive electrical infrastructure and mechanical and instrumentation workshops. It is unique in that it combines both tank testing and electrical test infrastructure allowing the facility to address both the hydrodynamic and electrical design of MRE devices.

OCEAN BASIN

Ocean Basin (25m x 18m x 1m deep): This facility was upgraded to make it the most advanced tank of scale circa 1:50 worldwide. Its curved wave paddle layout and sloping beach system minimises tank effects. This unique configuration facilitates the implementation of a comprehensive testing programme where individual devices and arrays can be tested in multidirectional wave conditions and at different water depths.

DEEP OCEAN BASIN

Deep Ocean Basin (35m x 12m x 3m deep): It has a moveable floor plate to allow the water depth to be adjusted, making it suitable for circa. 1/15th scale operational conditions and 1/50th scale survival waves and is capable of a peak wave 1.1m in height.

WAVE AND CURRENT FLUME Wave and current flume (28m x 3m x 1m deep): A multi-purpose facility with the capability of running separate and combined unidirectional wave and current tests. It can generate current speeds of greater than 1m/s and it is fitted with a towing carriage that can operate at speeds up to 1.5m/s.

MICROGRID Microgrid: A dual-bus three phase 400V system consisting of generation, storage and load elements. It can operate in parallel with the local grid or as an islanded system (33kVA diesel generator, Ocean Energy Convertor Emulator, 5kWh lithium ion battery storage).
