Process control details revealed for world’s most digitised mill

M

ore technical details of the overall process control systems

that will be used at SCA’s pulp mill expansion at Östrand in Sweden have been revealed by ABB. The so-called Helios project

represents an investment of SEK 7.8 billion (US$924m), the biggest ever in northern Sweden, and will more than double production of bleached softwood kraft pulp to 900,000 tons a year, making the mill the largest of its type in the world when production starts in June 2018. ABB was originally going to

supply is Ability System 800x, which includes a fully-integrated control and monitoring centre that provides a complete process overview and the possibility to personalise ergonomics and work environments for each operator. In addition to integrated process control and power monitoring, ABB will also supply transformers, motors, frequency converters and drive systems for large areas of the mill. The latest addition to the order

is for the installation of OPT800 Advanced Process Control, which enables control of production against key ratios such as

reduced raw material and energy costs, emission restrictions and others. ABB says Advanced Process

Control will enable maximum productivity and maximise flow throughout the entire mill to ensure the right quality and minimal energy consumption. The functionalities are integrated into the single operator environment to provide operators with real-time decision support to help them run the mill in the most optimal way. The system will monitor and

optimise the processes for pulp washing management, oxygen delignification, bleach control,

causticising and evaporation. By utilising the information already available in ABB Ability System 800xA, the system can customise multi-function control with a range of variables based on advanced analytics to help optimise these process areas. To reduce conversion times and ensure the correct quality when changing parameters for a new product run, the system also includes recipe management and pulp follow-up functions to monitor the pulp status throughout the process. Other key equipment suppliers

to the Östrand mill expansion include Valmet and Andritz.
