and one can only hope that it continues for awhile longer. Over the 14-15 October weekend I was in Boothbay at the Tugboat Inn and what great weather we had. Hope- fully it is not something that we will pay dearly for during the winter. I was glad to hear my weatherman, Jim Witt of WKIT and weatherwiz.com, say that he did not think this winter would be too bad. However, I would like to know why we allow those tourist to stay longer every year. They used to disappear by September, but now they stay right through the Fall and even early Winter. Thankfully it is the southern part of the state that is aff ected the most! In the last issue I had a photograph of the

lobster boat SUNSHINE sitting in the harbor at Cliff Island with the question did anyone know anything about her. I got a call from a fi sherman over on Vinalhaven that knew a lot about her history as she was built by Mariner and Isaac Beal of Beals Island for a fi sherman from there in 1973, Mark Bradley. Unfortunately, SUNSHINE would be found circling by Max Ames in October 1975, and there was no sign of Mark. This person also talked about other boat names such as: BUGABOO, for Harvey Lembo; LILLIAN B., John Bickford, Jr.; and ELLEN LOUISE, Roger Beal, by Herman Backman, Jr., which rolled over while scalloping. While I was putting all this down, hop-

ing I wrote it down correctly, it was obvious that I really need to reorganize the list of boats built on the coast and begin collecting more information. Over the years, I have spent a lot of time documenting the larger vessels built along the coast and beyond, but this is newer history and therefore there are people still alive that can add to the unwrit- ten history so we do not lose as much as we

have of the bigger vessels. I took a quick scan of the 1973-74 volume of “National Fisherman,” and was surprised by how few boat launchings were included. There was an article on several of the builders, but I was surprised by how much is missing. While I was in Portsmouth at their pub-

lic library last month I was working in the New Hampshire Gazette for 1759 and was surprised when I came across an article on a voyage up the Penobscot River. It tells of the ship KING GEORGE arriving in Penobscot Bay in the spring of that year. The crew made their way up the river to the fi rst falls, where Brigadier General Waldo suff ered a stroke and died. He was buried at the fort, which was located at Fort Point in Stockton. There is a very good description of the exploration of the area and the construction of the fort. There is also reference to a fi shing schooner, under the command of Capt. Christopher Dyer of Casco Bay, which went ashore on the northeast side of the harbor in the Southeast Passage of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The seven men were surprised by a number of Indians, who killed and scalped fi ve of them and carried off a man and a boy. The fi ve bodies were later taken to Boston. I had hoped to have the entire account of the voyage up the Penobscot River in this issue, but ran out of time and it will be in the next one.

As we work our way into the Fall, I

hope to get much more data entered into the computer. I am almost done entering all the data from the 1888 “List of Merchant Vessels of the United States” (MVUS) and now comes the decision whether to continue entering more vessels from MVUS or start on the Bath Custom House records. If the winter is long enough I might be able to get them both done!
