SOUTH WEST BUSINESS NEWS

Rural Enterprise Centre set to open

The Bath & West Society is opening a Rural Enterprise Centre. Work is already well underway at the Centre, with the doors due to open in January. The society’s former office

building at the Bath and West Showground is currently undergoing a £520k refurbishment, set to become the hub of rural enterprise across Somerset and the South West of England, encouraging knowledge sharing, education and business growth among the rural community. Featuring a conference and

seminar area for up to 80 people, a commercial test kitchen, a number of meeting rooms and office space for agri-tech, food and drink or rurally focused businesses, the Society’s Rural Enterprise Centre will be a valuable facility in supporting the development of agricultural businesses, land-based skills training and micro food and drink companies. Chief executive of the Bath &

West Society, Rupert Cox, said: “Our aim is to cultivate rural advancement by creating a living- breathing community for rural businesses to advance enterprise across the region.”

Double Olympic rowing gold medallist James Cracknell OBE hopes to inspire people to get fit and have fun by getting involved with his latest project: the Weston-Super-Half. To be held on Sunday 18 March, the inaugural Weston-Super-Half will be the only mass participation event in the world in which the runners will cross the finish-line a quarter of a mile out to sea – at the end of Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier itself. Cracknell, who is the guest speaker at Bristol’s European City of Sport conference 2017, became one of the world’s top endurance athletes, finishing as the highest ever Brit in the gruelling Marathon des Sables in 2010, before he was hit by a truck while crossing America for a Discovery Channel TV series. His recovery from a serious brain injury has exceeded all

expectations and in April this year he achieved a seven-minute PB of 2:43:12 at the London Marathon. “Running is a big part of my life – the physical and

emotional benefits of getting out in the fresh air and moving our bodies have been proven time and again. With the NHS under so much pressure, Runjoy (the organisers) want to do what we can to help individuals, but also our great country. I started with a blank piece of paper, an inkling that Weston would make the perfect venue and a desire to create a brand new running event. This race will be fantastic. I can’t wait to run it myself!” Tickets for the European City of Sport conference can be booked at www.eventbrite.co.uk
