Core Mathematics


Applied Level 3 Exam Board: Edexcel


Core Maths is a relatively new Applied Level 3 qualification designed for students who achieve a grade 9 to 4 in GCSE Mathematics, but who choose not to continue with AS Level or A Level Mathematics. It is equivalent to an AS qualification. It is an engaging and relevant course which enables students to improve their knowledge of Mathematics and understand how to apply it to situations in the real world.


The course will support student progression by preparing learners for the mathematical requirements of a number of Further and Higher Education courses. It will develop students’ understanding and ability to apply mathematics, and become equipped to apply for employment or higher apprenticeships in a wide range of industry sectors, professional training or university.


Topics that are covered include: • applying statistical approaches to problem solving • probability and risk • linear programming • sequential growth.


If students are concerned about coping with the mathematical content in their other A Levels, then this course will help them overcome these concerns and improve their understanding of other areas.


Assessment takes the form of 2 exam papers.
