he holidays are just around the corner. We’ve been making soap and skin care products for over seventeen years, fi ne tuning our recipes to bring you an entire line of fabulous products. Most of our products are vegan friendly, too! The three ingredients we get asked about the most are fragrance oils, essential oils, and preservatives.
Fragrance oils: Fragrance oils are scented oils that are partially or wholly made from synthetic aromatic compounds although many fragrance oil blends do contain essential oils. We source high qual- ity, phthalate-free fragrance oils and our labels will state “fragrance oil” when it is present in a product. Did you know that fragrance oils are often the more responsible source of scent than essential oils? The sandalwood tree has been over-harvested and is endan- gered. It is far more responsible to use a fragrance oil to bring this scent to life rather than endangering more trees. It takes 312 pounds of rose petals to make 1 ounce of rose essential oil. The current cost for one ounce, or two tablespoons, of rose oil is about $530. As lovely as rose is, it is far too expensive to use to make soap.
Essential oils: Essential oils are fragrant oils wholly made from natu- ral sources such as the fl owers, leaves, bark, berries, roots, resins, or other parts of plants. Our all-natural products are scented and fl avored with pure essential oils. It is important to understand the properties of any essential oil you plan to use, and to use it at the appropriate dilution and application. Our labels will state “essential oil” when it is present in a product.
Preservatives: Many Kettlepot products are preservative-free, such as our bar soaps, lip balms, massage butters and oils, body butters, arnica balms, bath bombs, bubble bars, perfumes, and menthol shower steamers. However, we do use preservatives in our lotions, emulsifi ed sugar scrub, cuticle treatment gel, insect spray, and liquid soap. Why these products? In a word, water. These products contain water, a necessary ingredient for microbial growth. We believe that is it not safe for you to use, nor for us to sell, a product that is not preserved. We use a paraben-free, formaldehyde-donor- free preservative in our lotions, sugar scrub, and cuticle gel and a natural preservative in our insect spray and liquid soap.

Kettlepot uses only natural, plant-sourced oils and butters; essen- tial oils for fl avor or fragrance; and botanicals, plant-infused oils, charcoal, earthen oxides, or clays for color. We offer a lovely selec- tion of all natural bar soaps, body butters, perfumes, lip balms, and more. We also make a number of products that are mostly natural, i.e., 95-99% natural. We use our natural, plant-based oils and add fragrance oils, mica colorants, edible fl avor oils, or preservatives when needed. Our lotions, sugar scrubs, cuticle treatment gel, most colorful bar soaps, and liquid soap fall into this category.
Natural skin care products can be both beautiful and affordable. It’s easy to be smart about skin care if you remember a few simple things:
S: be a savvy, informed consumer ~ don’t fall for hype or irrational claims,
M: be wary of medical claims that are not supported by testing A: be aware of any allergies you may have, R: read labels and research/ask about ingredients unfamiliar to you, T: treat yourself to handmade ~ we think you’ll be glad that you did!
