Top accolade for residential home

A CARE home in Staplehurst has been rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission. Gresham House received the

grading for its ‘caring and respon- sive’ approach to people’s needs. It was also rated ‘good’ for being safe, effective andwell-led. GreshamHouse, in Station Road,

provides support and accommoda- tion to adultswith learning disabil- ities. There were 12 residents – aged between 18 and 65 – at the time of the inspection. Deborah Ivanova, deputy chief

inspector of adult social care at the CQC, said: “Gresham House is clearly a service where people ex- perience a high level of care and support that not only promotes their well-being but also encour- ages themto enjoy a fulfilled life. “Staffwere found to go the extra

milewhen performing their duties, such as one-to-one sessions with residents who displayed signs of anxiety. “Inspectors found people were

encouraged by staff to make their own decisions and set goals and ac- tively promoted independence. “Relatives told inspectors that

they felt people living in the serv- ice were well cared for and valued by all the staff. “To receive an outstanding rat-

ing overall is a commendable achievement and the staff and management at the service should be very proud of the high quality, person-centred care they are pro- viding.” Mr Chris Barrett, deputy man-

ager at Gresham House – which is run by Broadham Care – said staff were particularly pleased. He said: “Our work and stan-

dards here reflect our company’s policy, which has picked up out- standing grades at four out of eight of our homes. “We work hard to support as

normal a life as possible for our res- idents with horse riding, trips to the cinema, bowling and time in the garden all regular events.”

Do you have a Step up to keep tradition alive

EVER fancied taking up a new hobby? Well a general invitation has been issued for newmembers to keep the age-old tradition of Morris dancing alive. Headcorn Morris has an active

male and female side, but wants to encourage youngermembers to give it a go, as the 20-strong team starts its six-month training sea- son. The group, which celebrated its

40th birthday in 2014, performed at a host of events this year, in- cluding regular spots at local pubs and at popular events including Lynsted Cherry Day and this year’s Biddenden Tractorfest and Country Fair. Retired forester Dick Hoare (pic-

tured second from left) lives in Tunbridge Wells and has been withHeadcornMorris for 30 years. He said: “Our membership in- cludes dancers aged from 17 to

70, but obviously we need new people coming through to ensure this tradition continues. “We appreciate there are so

many different distractions today, but morris dancing is an impor- tant part of our history and a fan- tastic way to make friends – and to travel.” Anyone interested in taking part

is invited to drop in to a rehearsal at Grafty Green Village Hall, be- hind the Kings Head pub, on a practice session: men on the 1st and 2nd Thursday of the month and ladies on the 2nd and 4th. A joint practice session is shared when there are five weeks in the month. Dancers are provided with their

first costume, free of charge. For
