MP patch shake-up ‘unlikely to happen’

changes will happen – not least because the gov- ernment’s partner, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), is unlikely to favour them. The BCE intends to re-


duce the number of MPs from 650 to 600 by the time of the next general election in 2022 by making the size of the re- maining constituenciesmore equal in size. MrsWhately, above, said: “I feel


this is truly uncertain to go through because the government may not be able to get amajority for it.


“To me, it is not worth speculat-


ing on. But I do look forward to being the MP for the Faversham and Mid Kent constituency until 2022.” Maidstone and the Weald MP


Helen Grant, as the MP with the biggest chunk ofMaidstone,will be viewed as the incum- bent going forward. Her new patch will include areas likeMrs Whately’s ParkWood and Shepway north and southwards. The

changes are not likely to find favour with the DUP – which has a “confidence and supply” agreement


with the Conservative government in order to give it amajority – as it is likely to lose a seat under bound- ary changes, taking Northern Ire- land’s quota from 18 to 17 seats at Westminster. MrsWhately added: “As I under- stand it, the DUP may not want to


go alongwith it. “And since theDUP provides the


government with its majority, it might not get through. I’ll just carry on doingmy job.” Tonbridge and Malling – MP

TraceyCrouch – becomesChatham and TheMallings, andwill include Snodland, West Malling, East Malling, Kings Hill, Aylesford and Larkfield along with Princes Park, Walderslade, Luton and Chatham Central. Tunbridge Wells is to be named


Tunbridge Wells and Crowbor- ough, to include six wards from the East Sussex borough of Wealden.
