CONGRESS

Delegates get the chance to relax and network.

Coordinator for the international Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation at the University of Colorado, USA, who chaired sessions at this year’s Congress.

‘In the future, it is likely that we can really maximise therapeutic effect, while minimising potential risks, harms and side effects. There are many novel research discoveries and breakthroughs being made in this area and I think for pharmacists and the pharma healthcare force to step into the future as precision pharmacotherapy experts, we should be leading the implementation and validation of advancements made in this arena.’

SMART PHARMACY

Another key focus of the conference was ‘smart pharmacy’. Technological advances are changing the face of health care. Web-based technologies are advancing particularly rapidly and providing new avenues for gathering and sharing information. To keep on track, pharmacists need to be up-to- date with the latest advances and technologies available to them. They also need to make sure they know how to use them and that they can provide appropriate advice to patients.

Ms Liu and Ms Yi co-chaired a session at the Congress entitled ‘Smart learning: Dynamic integration of technology into education’, which focused on the technological advances that can improve the education of pharmacists and the healthcare they provide.

‘By delving into the evidence behind emerging mobile and e-health technologies,’ Ms Liu continued, ‘this may lead us to find a way to teach healthcare professions and students to better critically evaluate these new tech tools, in order to help patients make better, informed decisions on

which are the most effective and validated.’

Despite the obvious difficulties created by the political tension in the region, the Congress organisers were delighted by the positive feedback received from the attendees and, needless to say, Dr John McAnaw, Chair of the Scottish Pharmacy Board of the RPS, is delighted that his home town will be the next host of this globally-recognised event.

‘Hosting the FIP World Congress here in Scotland is just fantastic,’ he old SP, ‘and it will provide many of our researchers and practitioners from industry, hospital and community sectors across Scotland and the UK with an opportunity to tell the world about the great work they are doing.

‘The themes of the Congress harness science and practice equally well, and emphasise the strong link between the two for pharmacy, and I believe this will help ensure there is something for everyone at the Congress.

‘Not only will delegates be able to hear, learn from or question those people presenting on the platforms, but I hope the amazing networking opportunity with colleagues from around the world that’s available over the five days will give them something to take back to the bench, bedside or practice when they leave. I want people to inspire and to be inspired, as there is much to learn from how people do things in other countries around the world.

‘I encourage everyone to consider going to the FIP World Congress in Glasgow next year, and my message to those visiting my home town for the first time (or returning) I can assure you of a warm welcome and the best of times.

‘See you there in 2018!’ •
