THE DIG METHOD
First Presbyterian’s DIG (Digging Into God) format resembles Vacation Bible School, providing numerous stations in which children encounter God’s Word in multiple ways, including art, drama, music, and mission projects. Children attend a single station each Sunday, so each week is a new experience. Adult leaders prepare just a single lesson per six-week series that they present to different groups of children each week.

“I am the vine and you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from
me you can do nothing.” —JOHN 15:5
God is awakening our children in real and profound ways. Hear them…
A first-grader exclaims: “Pastor Stephen, Pastor Stephen! See this vine? I’m gonna go home and find a branch to connect to it because we are connected to Jesus.”
A parent reveals: “I used to have trouble getting my child up in the morning. Now when she wakes up, she asks, ‘Is today a DIG day?’”
When a third-grader was asked, “What’s your favorite thing about DIG?” she smiled and said “I love it all!”
A DIG leader observes: “I see children waking up to scripture. God’s Word is alive in these stations! I am blessed to be a part of this.”
And that’s just the first series!
Above and left: Children in kindergarten through fifth grade gather for DIG, which has added vitality to FPCA’s Sunday morning faith formation activities.
What’s ahead in the second six-week series? Te DIG Crew and DIG leaders will look at the depth of our rootedness in Christ. How did we become rooted in Christ? How has this 186-year-old faith community known as First Presbyterian Church of Allentown deepened its roots in Christ? How do these young disciples grow in their rootedness in Christ?
In Holy Word Studio, we’ll find our roots in the story of Abraham and Sarah. Each family has ancestors, and the family of Christ does too!
In Spirit Studio, we’ll joyously embrace our rootedness as we proclaim in song: “Just like a tree that’s planted by the water, I shall not be moved.” Moses will guide us to explore our roots, just as he led the Hebrew people.
In Destination Discipleship, we’ll be the hands and feet of God in Allentown
as we assemble personal care bags and write encouraging messages for clients of St. Paul’s and Allentown’s Warming Station. Te legacy of this faith community over the last 186 years will ground us in our history and tradition of service in the Lehigh Valley.
Creation Station will enable us through example to dig deep and find the courage to be rooted as we learn how Queen Esther preserved our roots by saving the Jewish people a long time ago.
At the end of each series, parents, grandparents, guardians—you!—are invited to Parent Café to explore ways to talk about faith at home.
Don’t you just wish that you could be a child again? Talk to our children and ask them about their experiences in DIG. Teir faith will inspire you to grow deeper roots in Christ.
