Guide to Small-Group

Studies Fifth in a series on groups that can connect you to the life of the church

BY NANCY HOFFMAN Have you been meaning to study God’s word but just haven’t found the time? Are you looking to make new friends and connect with members of our church family? We are blessed to have lay leaders in our church community who are willing to share their knowledge about the Bible and facilitate conversation. The following is a list of Bible study and conversation groups that meet at our church.

FRIDAY WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY

Every Friday during the school year, if you walk past Room 115 between 9:20 and 11:30 a.m., you will hear the sound of conversation and laughter. You will probably smell something delicious too, since this fabulous group of women likes breaking bread in addition to studying. Te group can range from 28 to 40 women, has representatives from all ages, and is open to those outside our church family as well. Te morning begins with devotion and prayer. Leader Marijo Taylor describes this year’s study as a walk through the New Testament. “Notice the word is ‘walk,’ not ‘run’!” she says. “We’ll be taking a short, leisurely look at each NT book, examining a few passages that are unique to that book, and how each passage impacts what Christians believe.” Child care can be provided upon request by contacting the church office.

TUESDAY CO-ED BIBLE STUDY

A newer addition to the FPCA calendar, this group consists of 12 to 20 people who meet in Room 115 on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tis year’s study is called Heaven, Hell, Salvation, and Resurrection—What Does the Bible Say? Te group, led by Marijo Taylor, discusses what happens after we die and where we are going. Many sessions rely on the book Surprised by Hope, by N. T. Wright, which both Jack Haberer and Tony Sundermeier have recommended. Note: You do not need this book to participate.

WEDNESDAY MEN’S DISCIPLESHIP GROUP

Te Wednesday Group averages about 12 men who meet at 6:45 a.m., generally to talk about recent events and impromptu topics. Around 7 a.m. the group shares prayer requests, prays, and discusses a book in the Bible (currently Acts). Participants often feel the Holy Spirit leads discussions into areas that none could have predicted.

Often, men discuss how to apply texts to daily life by helping the homeless, feeding the hungry, and putting into action what Jesus tells us about helping our neighbors. Men from this group have worked regularly with the homeless in Allentown through downtown churches and the Warming Shelter.

Wednesday meetings close with prayer and end at 8 a.m., though men often stay a few minutes to catch up with friends. – Mike Loomis

SATURDAY MEN’S GROUP

Tis group meets every other week at 9 a.m. in the Witherspoon Room to share fellowship and conversation. Te dozen or so participants take turns bringing a spiritual topic for conversation, but much time is spent “checking in” and sharing joys and challenges of daily life. Te group features a diversity of ages and experiences, and ministers to each other through prayer, conversation, and support.
