IN BRIEF BALEH

HYDROELECTRIC PLANT IN MALAYSIA TO BE COMPLETED

BY 2025 Sarawak Energy Berhad awarded the contract to China Gezhouba Group and Untang Jaya JV for the main civil works of 1,285MW Baleh Hydroelectric Plant in Malaysia. The awarded contract includes constructing the dam on the Baleh River, along with the 204m high con- crete-faced rockfill dam which will begin in October 2018. The project is set for commercial operations by 2025. Tenaga Nasional Berhad oper- ates three hydroelectric schemes in the peninsular with an installed gen- erating capacity of 1,911 megawatts. They are the Sungai Perak, Tereng- ganu and Cameron Highlands hydroelectric schemes with 21 dams in operation. A number of Independ- ent Power Producers also own and operate several small hydro plants.

COGEN PLANT FOR THAI INDUSTRIAL

ESTATE A new cogeneration plant has been opened on an industrial estate in Thailand. B.Grimm Power, an inde- pendent power producer, officially opened its BPWHA1 plant at the Hemaraj estate in Chon Buri province.

The 130 MW gas-fired plant can

produce 30 tonnes of steam per hour. It serves over 100 manufactur- ers in the steel, electronics, energy and auto parts sectors as well as other multinational companies on the industrial estate. In this joint venture with WHA Energy Co Ltd. B.Grimm Power has tentatively scheduled an IPO for late 2017 and says it aims to cement its position as Thailand’s largest small power producer, with a focus on cogeneration and renewables.

THREE GORGES POWER PROJECT - CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON BAIHETAN

STATION China Three Gorges Corp. (CTGC) has

started the construction phase of the 16 GW Baihetan hydropower station on the Jinsha River in China, between the borders of Sichuan and Yunnan provinces (Anji County, Zhejiang province, between the cities of Tianhuangping and Shanchuan). The power station will consist of 6 generating units of 1,000 MW each and is expected to have an average annual power output of 62.4 TWh. The project’s core structures will include a 277- metre tall arch dam with a crest

US$63 MILLION INVESTMENT IN NEW VIETNAM CHP PLANT BY HO TRAM

Ho Tram Project Company (HTP) and

PetroVietnam Low Pressure Gas Distribution Joint Stock Company (PVGasD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to build a cogeneration

Michael Kelly, HTP’s executive chairman, said with the signing of the MoU, his company would become the first tourism developer in Viet Nam to fully switch to self-generated, greener energy sources. The pioneering move saw HTP invest in a natural-gas fuelled plant that would emit less than half of the carbon-dioxide and significantly less harmful particulates and carbon monoxide than coal powered sys- tems. Vietnam’s revised Power Development

Plan 7 (PDP 7) sets out a blueprint for expanding power generation by using a mix of energy sources. The plan foresees VND3207trn ($148bn)

power plant worth $63 million for Ho Tram’s own projects in Vietnam. The project will include a thermal power generation plant within the existing Cen- tral Plant Building on the company’s 164ha site.

Construction is expected to begin later this year and will provide energy for Ho Tram Strip in late 2018.

worth of investments in generation & distribution capacity through to 2030, with installed capacity to rise to more than 135 GW. According to the plan, around $40bn will

be invested between 2016 and 2020, of which 75% will be allocated for increasing power generation and 25% will go towards network development.

elevation of 827 metres, flood discharge structures, water diversion and power generation facilities. The total cost of the project is expected to reach at least US$26.5bn. CTGC plans to commission the first group of units in 2021 and the project will commissioned by 2022.
