Power Supplied via CCHP to the First Airport in China with a Distributed Energy System
Hunan, China - CPG’s Lean-Burn generator sets are being used in Changsha Huanghua Airport which opened in 1989. The site is unique in that it uses natural gas to generate electricity & recovers waste heat to meet the demands of air conditioning and heating.
Two 1160 kW C1160 N5C
Lean-Burn Gas generator sets from Cummins Power Generation serve the airport’s Combined Cooling, Heating and Power (CCHP) system which provides a daily power supply for the airport infra- structure, as well as cooling water, domestic hot water and heating in winter. Huanghua International Airport is the single largest individual building in central China and the fifth in the whole country, is located in the suburban Changsha, Hunan. The project investor - Changsha ENN Broad (XinAo, Yuanda) Energy Services Co Ltd - selected two Cummins Power Generation C1160 N5C 1160 kW lean-burn gas gener- ator sets as the core system to provide a power output of 2.3 MW for the energy station. The two generator sets
operate in a mode of ‘parallel- ing to the utility power grid without exporting electricity to the grid. As soon as a utiliy

power failure occurs, these two generator sets work in ‘island’ mode, to ensure the key electrical equipment in the airport are powered. In addition to supplying
electrical power, Cummins gas generator sets also provide 500°C exhaust gas and 95°C jacket cooling water which enters the flue gas and waste- fuelled direct combustion se to provide a heat source of about 3 MW. While the loading peak is
coming, the direct combustion set uses natural gas as fuel to secure an electrical power

supply. The Cummins C1160N5C gas-fuelled generator sets have been equipped with the state-of- the-art PCC3.3 PowerCommand Controller which features automatic remote start/stop, precise regulation of frequency and voltage, indication of electric- parameters and automatic shutdown under fault conditions. It sends a remote start signal to the generator sets from the central control room at 6:00am to start the genera- tor sets automatically, and then monitor the operation during each day. A shutdown
signal is then sent at midnight to cool down the generator sets.
Calculated on 18 hours of
operation at full load per day, the income via sales of electricity produced in the project has been estimated at over RMB 5 million each year, based on RMB 0.72/kWh. The more power
generated, the more income received. The air conditioning source provided by gas generator sets can be used without extra cost, providing the airport with huge savings in electricity use.
