22 GAS GENERATOR SETS
Generator sets powering 5MW gas-based power stations in Tamil Nadu
Two Cat G3612 generator sets are currently powering 5MW natural gas-based power plants operated by SEDCO at Nallur, Tiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. Cat G3612 generator sets were chosen to power the project, based on the maximum uptime and ability of the engine to run continuously on natural gas.

sets were chosen to power the project for SEDCO, part of the Murugappa Group, a key conglomerate based in Chennai, India. SEDCO was established to
managed a captive source of power for the Groupn at Nallur, Tiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. SEDCO picked the generators based on the maximum uptime and ability of the engines to run continuously on natural gas. A spokesman from CAT
told IPA: “G3600 engines provide a wide range of power options to fit most gas compression applications. G3600 engines bring the highest uptime in the industry and long operating intervals between overhaul. Operator- susing G3600 engines in their fleet enjoy virtually no unscheduled downtime, the right power for their application, the lowest

Manager at Southern Energy Development Corporation Ltd. (SEDCO) spokes to IPA about the company’s choice of engine: “It seemed a big challenge to identify a reliable genset partner who provided a good product, great service and reliable support. In fact,

the list grew until we met Gmmco, the Cat dealer for southern and western India.” Varadarajan, associated
with this project from conception to installation, has always been pleased with product support services. “Parts and technical
support by Gmmco have been more than satisfactory,” he said. “There are instances I have
witnessed where parts were carried and delivered within 24-hours in person, which
resulted in saving a week’s time at a crucial period.” According to SEDCO, the
machines have been perform- ing consistently with 98% availability for eight years. The two Cat G3612 generator sets have already each clocked up a staggering 65,000 hours of operation at 100% load. With a major overhaul performed recently, these generator sets are expected to continue for many years ahead, says SEDCO.
