CHP

20 MW fuel cell combined heat and power plant installed in Seoul, South Korea

A 20 MW fuel cell combined heat and power (CHP) plant has been inaugurated in Seoul, South Korea. The Noeul Green Energy Co plant was constructed by South Korea’s Posco Energy and features technology from US-based FuelCell Energy, reports IPA.

FuelCell Energy, Inc. has

entered in to an agreement with South Korea-based Korea Southern Power Company (KOSPO), for a fuel cell project. The project will use FuelCell Energy’s SureSource solutions.

Under the terms of the

deal, FuelCell Energy will be supplying the 20MW of fuel cell power plants and expects to operate and maintain the fuel cell plant under a 20-year service agreement. FuelCell Energy’s

SureSource 3000™ modules will be used in this project. FuelCell Energy has just begun shipping the modules and expects to complete them by early 2018.

Construction will start during the end of 2017 and the project is expected to become operational by 2018. The plant where the fuel

cell units will be installed is owned by South Korea’s largest utility, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP).

supplies power to Korea Power Exchange (KPX) and heat to a district heating network operated by Korea District Heating Co, the nation’s largest heat supplier. FuelCell Energy said the

park where the plant is based was completed in just 10 months.

Chip Bottone, FuelCell

Energy’s president and CEO, said the project “Occupies less than two acres of land and benefits Seoul by generating enough power for approximately 43,000 Korean households and heat for

approximately 9,000 house- holds.’

Comprised of two 1.4

megawatt (MW) modules, the SureSource 3000 generates 2.8 MW of ultra-clean power. Similar to the SureSource 1500, the system is said to be well-suited for onsite applications and caters to customers with an even greater power load requirement. Ideal applications include large universities, manufacturing facilities, wastewater treatment plants, or for multi- plant fuel cell parks to support the electric grid. The SureSource plants are

scalable so that multiple systems can be combined to provide tens of megawatts of ultra-clean energy to meet a customer’s power demand or to supply directly to the electric grid.

The clean emissions

profile, quiet operation and modest space requirements make these fuel cell parks easy to site in urban areas. This high power density is

reflected in a recent five-unit 15 MW fuel cell park located in an urban Bridgeport, Connecticut neighbourhood which occupies only 1.5 acres of land. www.fuelcellenergy.com
