THE GUIDE PARIS SHOPPING 2017/18

Ateliers Auguste creates bags for men that are timeless, functional, waterproof and built to last

cutting-edge international labels, such as Acne Studios, A.P.C. and Maison Kitsuné. In both neighbourhoods you’ll find big names rubbing elbows with one-off boutiques and up-and-coming designers – especially in the Haut Marais. The Marais is also full of vintage clothing and consignment shops, which range from glorified rag-pickers to purveyors of high-end designer gems. The Lower and Upper Marais are vaguely demarcated by the rue des Francs-Bourgeois, a street with wall-to-wall boutiques. Here are a few standouts there and to the south:

Ateliers Auguste 8 rue de Turenne

First of all, something for him… When Laurent and Xavier noticed that their pockets were overflowing, they decided to

dedicate themselves to the creation of man bags. Their leather is Belgian, their waxed cotton British, but their style and quality is oh so Paris.

Antik Batik 18 rue de Turenne

High-concept peasant clothes (think Stevie Nicks) in ethereally light Indian cottons and silks in prints and beaded styles.

Bazar de l’Hôtel de Ville 52 rue de Rivoli The BHV, as it’s always known, is named for its location across from City Hall. Its sprawling basement is still the go-to store for home hardware, but the BHV seems determined to become another Galeries Lafayette (they are owned by the same group), cramming its once-capacious stationery and art supplies departments into smaller

quarters to accommodate the latest fashion brands.

Majestic Filatures 7 rue des Francs-Bourgeois Velvety soft cotton-cashmere blend T-shirts, sweatshirts, leggings and cardigans in chic but classic cuts and colours. Absolute fashion basics to pair with everything.

Bensimon-Autour du Monde 8 rue des Francs-Bourgeois Bensimon’s fashion and home store features the designer’s famously colourful separates in natural fibres, as well as stylish accessories, furnishings and textiles for the home.

Diptyque 8 rue des Francs-Bourgeois The French candle-maker par excellence, founded in the ’60s and beloved for dozens of

luscious aromas – fig, muguet des bois, tuberose, wisteria – now carries perfumes, home diffusers and a skin-care line.

Barbara Bui 32 rue des Francs-Bourgeois Barbara Bui rose to fame for her sleek, body-skimming silhouettes that raise biker chic to new, sophisticated heights. Look out for beautifully-cut leather trousers, elegant, hooded leather and fur jackets, and fabulous fitted blazers in silk velvet.

Zadig et Voltaire 42 rue des Francs-Bourgeois Z&V has an international following for its hyper-cool Parisian rock-star chic featuring basics in luxe fabrics: cropped jackets, minis, silk camisole dresses and some of the best the cashmeres around, all in the most yummy colours. ❯❯
