Villagers urged to back church

AN appeal has gone out to resi- dents in Hollingbourne, both new and old, for financial support for the parish church. The Friends of Hollingbourne’s Historic Church have issued the re- quest to villagers, including those in the recently-completed Godfrey Meadow development. Andrew Brice, chairman of the friends, who look after the fabric of the building as well as improve- ments to the churchyard, says that, thanks to the group and many oth- ers, All Saints’ Church is in excellent condition. However, the vestry roof now

needs to be repaired with alterations at a cost of £17,000, with the friends contributing more than £10,000. He said: “The repair will deplete

our funds considerably and these need to be built up again.” The group has donated more than £22,000 towards a series of projects. These included £1,900 in 2004 for re- placing the floor under one set of pews; £6,000 towards roof repairs in 2006; £9,368 for making safe the electrics in 2009; £2,593 for emer- gency repair to the lych gate in 2010,

and £2,500 in 2013 for tree surgery. Individuals contribute small amounts of £5 or £10 per month by standing order, building up a fund for future use. Mr Brice said: “With an old building, one never knows what will be required next. The only certainty is that it will be expensive.” A donation of £200 was made to

the Friends in early September by the customers of the Sugar Loaves public house in Eyhorne Street. Parishioners at Hollingbourne

were preparing to welcome their new Team Vicar , the Rev Paul Kite (below), at a service at St Mary’s Church, Boxley on Monday, Septem- ber 25. A former tax in- spector, he served as a curate on the Isle of Sheppey be- fore taking up his new role as Vicar of Boxley, Detling,
