MynnAwards seek deserving recipients
THE parish council is once again seeking nominations for local residents who deserve a special award for their work in the community.
We all know someone who qui- Firework date
THEBearstedParish Council annual fireworks display takes place at the Elizabeth Harvie Field from 6-9pm on November . Tickets for the event were due to
go on online sale as Downs Mail went to press, but details can be ob- tained via the parish council’s web- site or Facebook page. A very limited number of tickets
will be held back for sale on the door on the evening. This year’s event is slightly differ-
ent, having secured a new fireworks provider who will set the display to a Disney musical theme. Organisers have also secured a se-
curity company to help, but volun- teers are needed on the night – particularly an event manager and a safety officer. Get in touch with the parish clerk if you think you can do either of these roles. IMPORTANT NOTICE: The top end of Cross Keys will be shut and vehicular access to the Elizabeth Harvie Field will be limited to as- sisted parking only.
French link
HOLLINGBOURNE Parish Council is seeking partners for its twinning arrangement with a French village. The council has a link with Tem-
pleuve, a small town in northern France near Lille, but its 3,000 resi- dents outnumber Hollingbourne’s by about five to one. So other local communities, such as Bearsted or Leeds, are invited to amalgamate in the twinning arrangement. Bearsted Parish Council decided to gauge public opinion before mak- ing any decision.
Opinions and thoughts should be sent to clerk@bearstedparishcoun-
cil.gov.uk or drop a note into the parish office at Madginford Hall.
Play scheme
THE total revenue from the summer play scheme at Roseacre Primary School was £7,300.
Cllr Fiona Redman said: “It’s look- ing like it didn’t make a loss – it was basically sold out.”
etly gets on with selfless acts of good in the parish and perhaps has not had the recognition he or she deserves. That is why the Mynn Awards
are awarded to local people who have made an outstanding contri- bution to Bearsted or their neigh- bourhood. Past winners have included vol- unteers, charity workers, sports- men and women and supporters of many organisations, including our local churches.
The Mynn Awards will be given
at next spring’s Annual Parish Meeting at a venue to be an- nounced in due course. The process is once again being co-ordinated by Cllr Pat Marshall. A panel of assessors will be ap- pointed to decide who will receive the celebrated awards. The awards are named after Al-
fred Mynn, once a Bearsted resi- dent, who played first class cricket in the Kent in 19th century. As a tall all-rounder, he famously scored a second innings century in
1836, having suffered a broken ankle.
There is plenty of time to get
your nomination in and the process is very simple. Just email the parish clerk the name and details of the person who deserves a Mynn Award and the reasons. Contact clerk@bearstedparish-
council.gov.uk or pop a letter into the parish office at Madginford Hall.
Downs Mail will publish updates
in the coming months as fresh de- tails emerge of the event.
Parish on map THE parish council has adopted an
online tool to help members in fu- ture.
The new mapping function will highlight the location of parish boundaries, the placement of bins and benches as well as a host of other useful applications.
It will also help the authority use much less paper.
Music event boosts charities
MUSIC on the Green has been able to donate £16,000 of its £17,035 profits to three local good causes, in- cluding Young Lives Foundation (£7,500), Demelza Hospice (£7,500) and Roseacre Raiders (£1,000). Organisers reported a big increase in costs, largely down to responding to public feedback from last year. Festival-goers had wanted more toilets and bins, and a security firm was brought in to assist with the run- ning of the event. But the increase in costs was off- set by a ticket price increase and
sponsorship deals. Organiser Jo Conner said the feed-
back from this year’s event had been overwhelmingly positive. A provisional date for next year’s
event is on the Bank Holiday week- end on August 26. This date was rat- ified at the September full parish council meeting. Chairman Richard Camp said: “On behalf of the parish council, I would like to say a big well done for raising £16,000 for charities.”
A small sum has been held back to cover future costs.
Date set for Christmas fair BEARSTED Christmas Fair takes place on The Green, from 2-8pm on
November 25. It will be a chance to kickstart the festive period to help your Christmas shopping with additional entertainment and activi- ties for all the family.

28 Maidstone East October 2017
A council spokesman said: “It’s a brilliant tool – great for planning, for instance, as it maps out recent build- ing works. It should help to reduce the amount of paperwork we gener- ate.”
Defibrillators THE parish council is keen to gauge
public interest in having defibrilla- tors installed in public places. Cllr Pat Marshall said three are currently available locally, but only when the private premises are open. Would you support the parish council discussing further the instal- lation of defibrillators in the parish? Contact the clerk with your views.
College plan
BOROUGH councillors Val Springett and Denis Spooner remain in favour of a new science college in New Cut Road, but are equally con- cerned about access, parking and ve- hicle volumes.
The borough council’s planning committee has deferred the applica- tion while a number of questions re- main.
