Alde Valley Academy celebrates outstanding GCSE results
STUDEnTS at Alde Valley Academy in Leiston celebrated yet another set of outstanding results. This year’s GCSE results saw 62% of pupils gain- ing a grade 4 and above in maths and English combined, and 43% gaining a grade 5 or above in maths and English combined. This continues the rapid improvements that the school has made since converting to academy status under the Bright Tribe Trust and leadership of Principal Michael Wilson including excellent A-level results last week which saw the number of A* - C grades achieved by students rise from 44% in 2016 to 57% in 2017. The 2017 summer exam sea-
‘Fareshare’ to be able to offer the community access to food thats far too good to be chucked in the bin! We will have a free food shop running from our September Swap and Mend on Saturday 23rd September and again on Sunday 24th September, 10am-11am at the Unitarian Meeting Room, Framlingham. The food share is open to anyone on a first come first serve basis but if you or someone you know is ‘in need’ let us know by simply saying “I need a food share” and we will put some food aside for you each week. success in other countries and nearby towns, we are on the hunt for space to start a “mending shed”. A place where volunteers from the community can come lend a hand at fixing or get their items fixed. We want to bring people together, saving landfills and your money! Do you have a shed, garage, barn... Anything you think might house us? Can you find somewhere for this proj- ect to live and donate it to Greener Fram? Even short-term would be useful to launch this project. If you want to volunteer, fix
things or teach others your skills please get in touch, just email us

son saw students sitting the new grade 9 – 1 GCSEs in English and maths for the first time. Under the new grading system grade 9 is the highest grade, set above the current A*. The inten- tion of the new system is to pro- vide more differentiation, par- ticularly among higher achiev- ing pupils. As the grades do not map across to the A* - G format this means comparison with pre- vious years cannot be made immediately. In spite of the increased chal-
lenge of the new GCSEs, a num- ber of students at Alde Valley Academy gained exceptional results, including grade 9s and A* grades in subjects which retained the A* - G grading sys- tem. Sadie Ellis is one excep- tional pupil, achieving a grade 9 in English language and litera- ture, an A* in science and two A grades in history and science. Maisie Debelgeonne also achieved a grade 9 for maths as
well as an 8 in English and two A grades in history and science. Evie Banham also achieved highly, gaining two grade 7s in English and maths, a grade 8 in English literature and 3 A*s in triple science, science and sports science. Ezra Taylor also gained an 8 in maths, a 7 in English lan- guage and literature, an A* in further science and an A in addi- tional science and sports sci- ence. “These outstanding results
celebrate another significant achievement for Alde Valley Academy, building on our record-breaking GCSE results in 2016 as well as our excellent
A-level results last week,” said Michael Wilson, Principal at Alde Valley Academy. “We plan to continue this success and look forward to welcoming our returning students back to school in September, as well as our new Year 7 cohort. A huge well done to all our students!” Mary McKeeman, Chief
Operating Officer, Bright Tribe Trust commented, “It is wonder- ful to see Alde Valley Academy achieve another set of outstand- ing results. Thanks to the hard work of everyone at the school and wider Bright Tribe Trust which has helped make this fan- tastic achievement possible.”
EVERYMAN FOLK CLUB
OUR guests at The Everyman Folk Club on Friday 29th Sep- tember will be The Teacups. A beautiful sound, Alex Cum- ming, Kate Locksley, Rosie Cal- vert and Will Finn are a vibrant cappella quartet, singing arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs in a wide variety of styles. This talented foursome met in 2010 whilst studying on the BSMus Folk & Traditional Music degree at newcastle University, and they have since appeared at top festi- vals and venues in the UK and Europe. On Friday 27th October Ken
Wilson and Jim McFarland will be our guests. Following the appearance of The Wilson Fam- ily at the club last year, we are delighted that Ken, a fabulous singer in his own right, is return- ing with Jim McFarland. From Derry, Jim has a characteristic
and gentle voice, and is one of Ireland’s finest traditional sing- ers. Ken and Jim perform Eng- lish and Irish traditional songs, enhanced by their mutual respect for each other’s singing and repertoire. The Everyman Folk Club
meet at The Riverside Centre, Gt Glemham Road, Stratford St Andrew, Saxmundham, IP17 1LL in the main hall on the last Friday of the month. All events start at 8pm with the doors open- ing at 7.30pm. Good disabled access and facilities are avail- able. Tickets only £5 if bought in advance & available for all events (otherwise £6 on the door subject to availability). For advance ticket sales please use the booking form on our website

FOLLOWInG the massive suc- cess of previous competitions, Leiston Film Theatre will once again be producing another talent contest, which will offer the lucky winner an opportunity to perform at a national talent showcase. Suffolk’s Got Talent is sched-
uled to appear at the Leiston Film Theatre on Saturday 17th February 2018 and will feature a cast of the counties hopefuls, who will com- pete for the £250 cash prize, plus a gold spot at a national talent show- case, performing in front of book- ing agents from the leisure industry. The competition is open to any
Suffolk resident, aged five years and over and there is no restriction to any considered talent from entering the contest, as producers want to hear from singers, dancers, musicians, magicians, comedians

and even talented pets! The competition will be over-
seen by a panel of professional judges, consisting of experienced agents, personalities and artistes, who will comment on each indi- vidual act and select the overall winner from the contestants par- ticipating in the event. Previous winner, Maddie Coel-
ho from Charsfield, has appeared all over the country since winning Suffolk’s Got Talent in 2010 and is currently playing Dorothy is a national tour of The Wizard of Oz. Maddie will be returning to the venue in June 2018, to appear in their ‘End of the Pier’ variety show and is looking forward to returning to the stage where her journey began. Leiston Film Theatre manager, Wayne Burns, is determined to dis-
cover another Suffolk star. “Suf- folk has a huge variety of talented acts and the aim of this competition is to showcase those talents in front of a live audience and to make an impression on those judges.” he said. Auditions for Suffolk’s Got Tal-
ent will be held at Leiston Film Theatre on Saturday 20th and Sun- day 21st January 2018 and applica- tion forms are now available from Leiston Film Theatre on 01728 830549, or via email at: info@leis-
