Major Setback for New Fromus Centre: Big Lottery Fund Bid

THE Saxmundham & District Community Interest Company (SADCIC) has just received the devastating news that their fund- ing bid for £800,000 to the Big Lottery Fund has been declined, five months after its submission. This money was to go towards building a first purpose-built community centre for Saxmund- ham, within the next two years - to provide a range of leisure, social, training, and wellbeing activities. SADCIC was formed by vol-

unteers, 10 years ago, to help regenerate Saxmundham. Public exhibitions and two major sur- veys of local residents showed great dissatisfaction with the cur- rent poor state of amenities and registered the strong desire for a community hub to bring people together. Saxmundham has grown rapidly in the last 20 years and it is still growing steadily and, yet, it has never had a proper com- munity centre. Back in 2011, as a short-term

interim measure, Suffolk County Council invited SADCIC to con- sider using their severely under- utilised ‘Saxmundham Resource Centre’ as a temporary commu- nity centre. In the last five years the SADCIC volunteer directors have worked 24/7 to gradually turn the building into a flourishing centre of community activities, ranging from parent and toddler classes and a weekend youth club to University of the Third Age (U3A) craft activities, including a

wide variety of dance classes, Pilates and Tai Chi classes and even a pop-up SMILE Café. Suffolk County Council is

working closely with SADCIC to realise the vision of a purpose- built community centre for Sax- mundham and has already com- mitted some replacement land, at a peppercorn rent as well as addi- tional matched funding. “After a long and sustained

10-year struggle by our group of dedicated local volunteers, we are bitterly disappointed with the Lottery setback for Saxmund- ham. However, having come this far we‘re not about to give up but are resigned to the fact that the time horizon has probably just slipped yet another two years fur- ther back. As the Saxmundham Town Council is about to start work on a neighbourhood Plan we will get behind that and see if it leads to new possibilities over the next two years. We will be re- contacting the Lottery to better understand their future outlook and possibly resubmit a funding bid in 2018,” said Don Tricker, SADCIC Chairman. If you would like to volunteer

to help with establishing the new Fromus Centre, help run the cur- rent centre or want to explore set- ting up a new activity, then email: don@saxcommunity.co.uk or telephone 01728 604944. More information can be found on the websites www.saxcommunity. co.uk and www.fromuscentre. org.uk .

News from Framlingham and Saxmundham Cats Protection

AS our fundraisers prepare for the Christmas season, our cat fosterers are also being kept busy with the continuing influx of cats needing new homes. If you are looking for a new feline companion, please consider adopting from a reputable rescue charity rather than shopping sites or kitten ‘farms’ from where you may not be given advice on the cat’s health. All CP cats and kittens come with the assurance that they will be health checked, vaccinated, treated for flea and worms, micro-chipped and neutered. Dates for your diary: We will

have stalls at Farlingaye School Craft Fair in Woodbridge on October 15th; and at Edinburgh Woollen Mills, Wyvale Garden

Centre, Woodbridge on October 17th andnational Black Cat day will be celebrated on October 27th. Cat care: Feline asthma is a

term used to describe a number of conditions affecting the air- ways in the lungs. It occurs when airway tissue becomes inflamed, the airways become narrowed and the cat has diffi- culty breathing. The cause may be due to an allergic response. A ‘trigger’ factor or irritant may be identified as the cause and this can include pollens, dust, ciga- rette smoke and some household sprays. Signs of the disease include

chronic coughing, sneezing and/ or wheezing, sudden onset of laboured and difficulty breath-

ing. Diagnosis will be made by your vet; chest X-rays and examination of the airways with an endoscope may be necessary and samples taken for laboratory examination. Treatment and management can be by anti- inflammatory drugs (oral, injec- tion or inhalational), drugs which assist the airways to dilate, and drugs which help dis- solve mucus can be given. Man- agement should involve reduc- ing exposure to irritants – for example, if pollen is an issue, limit outside access to dawn and dusk when pollen levels are lower than other times of the day. Prognosis depends on the severity of the disease and most cats respond well to treatment. Acute severe attacks can be fatal if treatment is not given prompt- ly. Situations where the cat could inhale irritants should be avoided and medication admin- istered as directed to ensure attacks are limited. Catology: As Black Cat Day

approaches, we have found another good reason (if such were actually needed) to have a sleek, shiny black feline about the house. In Manx mythology it is said that ‘a family that kept a black cat without a speck of any other colour would never have anyone drowned at sea’. Featured cats looking for a
