HARWICH G.M.T. – Aldeburgh minus 1hr 3 mins October 2017

TIDE TABLES

Final Fling

THE Long Shop Museum will once again mark the end of the season with a spectacular cele- bration of steam on Sunday 22nd October. Final Fling is our annual steam and activity day with full size and miniature engines being demonstrated in all their working glory. It runs from 11am to 4pm and highlights how the museum’s site in Leiston’s former Garrett Engineering Works, was a hub of industrial production with the design and manufacture of a pro- lific and diverse array of magnifi- cent machines. Why walk when you can take a

tractor ride from nearby car parks and get a sense of the sights, sounds, smells and sensations on offer through a mobile slice of agricultural history! Home- made refreshments be available in our pop up vintage tea-room

and there will also be a bar on site with a selection of real ales. Activities for children, a prize

draw, and further attractions to be announced. There will be a range of visit-

ing exhibits large and small including an Aveling and Porter steam roller and the unique Robey Showman’s traction engine. Visitors can look around the Museum’s original Garrett Works buildings and exhibits. Don’t miss the Final Fling of 2017, a static and moving pag- eant of engineering history – and a steamy affair! Ticket prices are £8 / £5 and

annual passes will not be valid for entrance on event days. For details of this and other events at the Long Shop, go to www.long- shopmuseum.co.uk

Aldeburgh Cinema

YOU might not expect to find a cinema in the heart of Alde- burgh, yet there has been one there since 1919 which has been screening films continu- ously ever since. Aldeburgh Cinema is man-

aged by a small management team and a dedicated Board of Trustees, supported by a wonderful team of part-time staff and an enthusiastic group of volunteers, who all work together to assemble a superb programme of films and events throughout the year. The striking building is

The Cinema is open all year round except Christ- mas Day, so is the perfect home for this new facility, with a friendly and welcom- ing team on hand to help and share their local knowledge, and a wide range of printed brochures to peruse and take away. So presumably, a small in-

dependent cinema in the heart of such a town is a quaint, old fashioned picture-house. Well, not quite. Aldeburgh Cinema was one of the first in the UK to add a digital pro- jector to its line up of work-

ing 35mm projectors, and is also no stranger to awards, having won Projection Team of the Year in 2014 and also nominated for Cinema of the Year in 2016. It all goes to show that small, independent cinemas really can compete with the multi-screen com- plexes. The team is also proud

of its Friends of Aldeburgh Cinema membership scheme which continues to grow and which now has close to 1,000 members. Friends can benefit from discounted ticket prices on most screenings, exclusive special events, priority book- ing periods and discounted wine at selected events. Be- coming a Friend is simple – just pop into the Cinema and pick up a membership form or contact the Cinema if you would like a Friends’ bro- chure to be sent to you. The Cinema offers a rich
